Louisiana State University Eunice (LSU Eunice or LSUE) is LSU's only two-year institution located in Eunice, Louisiana, that currently enrolls over 3,000 full and part-time students. LSU Eunice offers robust transfer programs and a wide variety of workforce training certificates and degrees in high demand fields such as nursing, radiologic technology, respiratory care, and diagnostic medical sonography. LSUE serves as the gateway campus to the LSU System and has the highest transfer rates among all two-year institutions in Louisiana.

History

LSU Eunice was founded in 1964 by the Louisiana State Legislature to provide basic higher education opportunities to students located in southwest Louisiana. The LSU Board of Supervisors approved the establishment of LSU Eunice and Louisiana State University Shreveport in 1965.

State Representative Allen C. Gremillion of Crowley was instrumental in passage of the legislation creating LSU Eunice.[3]

Through the work of Curtis Joubert, the former mayor of Eunice, LSU-E established the Cajun Prairie Wildflower Habitat.[4]

Athletics

The LSU–Eunice Bengals and Lady Bengals offer six varsity sports teams (three men's, three women's). The school sponsors baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer and softball and the teams are members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).[5] Baseball and softball are Division II NJCAA independent teams, while women's basketball competes in Division I in the Miss-Lou Conference. The athletic department's official nickname is Bengals or Lady Bengals.

The LSU–Eunice baseball team plays at Bengal Stadium, the women's basketball team plays at the HPRE Center and the softball team plays at Lady Bengal Softball Field.

National Championships

LSU–Eunice has won four NJCAA national titles in softball and six NJCAA titles in baseball. Women's basketball has made two appearances at the NJCAA National Tournament and finished as high as fourth in 2007.
