LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 45212 is a preserved British steam locomotive. It was built by Armstrong Whitworth at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1935.

Service history

It is a LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 locomotive, originally numbered 5212 by the LMS, it had 40000 added to its number under British Railways after nationalisation in 1948. 45212 was one of the last locomotives to be withdrawn from service, surviving until 1968, the last year of steam on British Railways.

Preservation

45212 was purchased directly from British Railways service for preservation so never had to be restored from scrapyard condition unlike other preserved locomotives which ended up being sent to Barry Island. The majority of her class including 45212 were purchased directly from BR service for preservation with only six being purchased from Barry Island and then required restoration to run again. Before being overhauled at Ian Riley's workshop in Bury she spent most of her previous boiler ticket operating at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, but wasn't able to run trains into Whitby or Battersby as she wasn't mainline certified.

Current status

45212 is normally based at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway but following her most recent overhaul is now operating on the mainline and during her down time is currently based at the East Lancashire Railway while on loan to Ian Riley for 5 years. She is used on West Coast Railways Jacobite trains down the West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig and back. She is also used on other West Coast Railways operated charter trains either in the north west or down south and whenever possible is sent back to the Keighley and Worth Valley Rly for a short while (min once a year).

Not yet completed, photographs from when on the mainline required alongside more recent photos from heritage railway visits.
