Kopi O

Kopi O

Kopi O is a traditional coffee commonly served in Malaysia and Singapore. It is a strong black coffee served with sugar. Today the coffee beans are roasted with sugar, butter, and oil.

Availability

This type of coffee can be found all over Malaysia and Singapore, especially in coffee shops. It can be served with ice, which will change its name to Kopi O Peng.

Name

This drink gets its name from a mix of Teochew, a dialect in both countries, Hokkien and Malay words. Kopi translates to coffee, and O translates to no milk, as Kopi without the O has milk and sugar. Thus, coffee brewers only add sugar into the coffee. Coffee without either would be 'Kopi O Kosong' (Kopi O nothing)
