Kim Jeffrey Kurniawan (born March 23, 1990) is a German-born Indonesian professional football player who currently plays for Persib Bandung in the Liga 1.

Background

Kim Kurniawan was born in Mühlacker, Germany, to a German mother Uschi and a Chinese Indonesian father, Petrus Kurniawan. His grandfather from his father's side, Kwee Hong Sing, was also a national team footballer who played for Persija Jakarta and also the Indonesian national football team in the 1950s. Born as a German, Kim decided to become Indonesian after Football Association of Indonesia offered him to play for the national team. He came to Indonesia in early 2010 with other Indonesian descent footballers Irfan Bachdim and Alessandro Trabucco. They were invited by Football Association of Indonesia to play in two charity games.[1] In December 2010, he officially gets the Indonesian passport and became the second naturalized football player after Cristian Gonzáles, who had done it earlier in November 2010.

Youth Career

Karlsruher SC

The whole youth career Kim played at the german Bundesliga club "Karlsruher SC". At the age of 6 after training at a soccer school in Karlsruhe the Coach of the club came to Kim to ask him if he want to join them. So since that time Kim was a part of one of the best junior academys in Germany and stayed there more than 12 years. Kim had many special experiences there, football education on the highest level, amazing training and match facilities and games against international clubs like Inter Milan, FC Valencia or german clubs such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 or Bayer 04 Leverkusen. But also sad experiences like his heavy knee injury at the age of 18 in Kims last junior season that ended his professional football career in Germany.

Senior Career

FC 07 Heidelsheim

After his knee injury which kept Kim away from the ball for almost one year and made him bury all his hopes to play professional football in Germany. But Kim didn't want to quit football because it was a part of his life so he decided to go amateur for his first senior year to gain experience and joined FC 07 Heidelsheim which played Verbandsliga at that time. Kim had a very successful first season, played every of the 28 games scoring 2 goals as they almost claimed promotion to the 4th german division but finally lost their relegation game. Kim already agreed to extend his contract for another year as almost all the players stayed and they were sure to clinch promotion in the upcoming season but plans changed as Kim got an invitation from Indonesia.

Persema Malang

Kims career in Indonesia started with an invitation to a Charity Game "Garuda Merah vs. Garuda Putih" in Surabaya and Malang in 2010. Besides that event Coach Timo Scheunemann also contacted Kim and offered him a trial at Persema Malang, a professional 1st division team in Malang. Kim only needed one training to convince Coach Timo to make him a part of his team, also the 2 games were good enough to gain the trust of Coach Timo and the management of Persema Malang. But things weren't that easy, because Kim didn't have the Indonesian passport they couldn't register him so he needed to wait until 6 December where Kim officially became Indonesian! Another big injury threw him back and made Kim stop dreaming of playing in the national team for the Suzuki AFF Cup 2010 but at the beginning of 2011 he finally signed a contract for Persema Malang and stayed there for almost 3 years. After some problems with the Indonesian football Kim decided to move on to another club and tried his luck in Thailand with unsatisfiying results.

Pelita Bandung Raya

So back in Indonesia 2014 Kim finally get the chance to play in the Indonesia Super League the most prestigious competition in Indonesian joining Pelita Bandung Raya (PBR). Dejan Antonic was the coach at that time, PBR sure wasn't the most talented and best team in the league but with hard work, extraordinary teamwork and passion they made it to the Top 4 having the chance to win the competition. Losing to Persipura in the semi-finals made them stop dreaming but nevertheless it was a very successful season for Kim as he made it in the team of the season. Even though Kim had offers from other clubs he decided to stay for the next season to continue where they ended the year before. But political problems unfortunately stopped the league after only 3 games so a hard time began for every professional footballer in Indonesia. After waiting a few months the ball was finally rolling again with some tournaments like "Piala Presiden" or "Piala J. Sudirman" where PBR also joined with moderate success. Simultaneously these 2 tournaments were the last for Kim in a PBR jersey as he was ready for the next step.

Persib Bandung

Having a fantastic year at PBR and his first appearance with the senior national team the next highlight was right around the corner as Kim joined the biggest and best indonesian club Persib Bandung in 2016.

Since Kim's arrival Persib Bandung already had two chances to win a trophy but both times in the "Bali Island Cup" and the "Piala Bhayangkara" they lost the final tightly against Arema Malang. In the Torabika Soccer Championship competition Persib Bandung finally became 5th, all in all it was a pretty successful season for Kim after a quite hard start.

The second season was not that successful after losing the Semi-Final of the "Piala Presiden" and becoming 3rd at the end. Also the league "Gojek Traveloka Liga 1" Persib Bandung only finished 13th place. Unfortunately in the 3rd last game Kim broke his Fibula after a tackle from a player of Persija Jakarta.

International career

In 2011 Kim got called up the first time for the u23 national team of Indonesia for the Sea Games 2011. Some first nice experiences followed the upcoming weeks, training camps in different cities with some friendly games continuing with two weeks preparation in Hong Kong. But Kim didn't get called for the final squad so he missed these Sea Games.

2015 after a good season at PBR Kim got attention from the senior national team with a following invitation to the official FIFA Friendly games against Cameroon & Myanmar. During the match in Sidoarjo on 30 March 2015 against Myanmar Kim was brought on and made his debut for the senior team in a 2-1 win.
