Jonathan Christian David (born January 14, 2000) is a Canadian soccer player who plays for Gent in the Jupiler Pro League.

Career

Club

Ottawa Internationals

Jonathan David spent his entire youth career in Ottawa under youth coach Hanny El-Magharabia. After playing for Gloucester Hornets, they transitioned to Ottawa Internationals Soccer Club (OISC). The pair together formed a very strong team in the Men's Premier division of the Ottawa Carleton Soccer League in their first season during the 2015–16 calendar year. The team included Benson Fazili and Monti Mohsen, with all three also playing for Canada's youth team. The team also featured Haider Kadhom who won Canada Games 2018 alongside Monti Mohsen, both playing for Team Ontario U-18. Having failed to win the league, they ended up with the Ottawa Cup (also known as the Bob Rathwell Cup), beating Celtic in a difficult final. Jonathan David left the club in January 2018 to join KAA Gent in the Belgium first division.

KAA Gent

In January 2018, David joined Belgian side Gent.[1] He made his professional debut on August 4, 2018 against Zulte Waregem and scored a goal in stoppage to time to salvage a 1–1 draw.[2] Just five days after his league debut, David came in as a second half substitute in a Europa League Third Round Quialifier against Jagiellonia Białystok, scoring a goal in the 85th minute to secure a 1–0 win for his team.[3] David continued his scoring streak three days later, coming in as a 71st minute substitute and scoring two late goals to secure a 4–1 league win against Waasland-Beveren.[4] After scoring 5 goals in his first 5 games with Gent, the club would sign David to a contract extension through 2022.[5]

International

Youth

Born to Haitian parents in Brooklyn, New York, David lived in Haiti before moving to Ottawa. David represented Canada at the 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship,[6] scoring a brace against Suriname in the final group game.[7] In May 2018, David was called up to the Canadian Under-23 team for the 2018 Toulon Tournament.[8]

Senior

David received his first senior call up to Canada on August 30, 2018 for a CONCACAF Nations League qualifier against the U.S. Virgin Islands.[9] He made his senior debut in the match on September 9, starting and netting a brace in an 8–0 victory.[10]
