Joëlle Jones is an American comic book artist and writer. She is best known for creating Lady Killer, a series published in 2015–2017 by Dark Horse Comics.[1]

Jones was born in 1980 in Boise, Idaho and grew up there.[2] She attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art to study oil painting.[3][4] She left school to pursue comic book illustration.[5] She stayed in the Portland, Oregon area for several years, where she worked as a freelance artist for Dark Horse Comics and Oni Press.[6]

Jones is currently based in California.[7][8]

Career

2006-2017

Jones's professional career began when some of her illustrations were published by Dark Horse Comics in 2006.[2]

Early in her career, Jones worked frequently with Jamie S. Rich. They collaborated on several titles published by Oni Press, such as 12 Reasons Why I Love Her(2006),[9] You Have Killed Me (2009),[10] and Spell Checkers (2010-2013).[11][12][13] She continued to work with Oni Press on Brides of Helheim in 2014 and 2015.[14]

In 2010, Dark Horse published Troublemaker, a graphic novel continuation of Janet Evanovich's "Barnaby" series; Jones created the artwork. Troublemaker was released in two parts and then released as a collected trade paperback in 2011.[15][16][17] In July 2014, Dark Horse Comics announced that it would publish Lady Killer. Jones illustrated and co-wrote the title with Rich. The series is about a 1960s housewife who moonlights as an assassin. The Jones-Rich arc had five issues, which were later collected in trade paperback form.[18] In 2016, Jones received three Eisner Awards nominations for her work on Lady Killer and Brides of Helheim (Best Limited Series, Best Penciller/Inker, Best Cover Artist).[19]

In 2015 and 2016, Jones illustrated and sometimes drew covers for several issues of Marvel's Mockingbird, Spider-Woman, Scarlet Witch, and Ms. Marvel.[20]

Jones illustrated and wrote (solo this time) a second Lady Killer arc of five issues.[21] These five issues were published in 2016 and 2017; they will be available in trade paperback form, too.[22] In September 2017, Jones's Lady Killer-style artwork was used as part of the runway backdrop at Prada's spring 2018 exhibition in Milan.[23]

DC Comics: 2016-present

Jones had worked as a freelance artist for DC Comics as far back as 2013.[24] Her art also appeared in titles published by Vertigo Comics, a DC imprint.[25] She participated in DC's Talent Development Workshop in the Spring of 2016 (as a writer).[26] In July 2016, DC announced that she would begin working exclusively for the publisher.[27] She has mentioned that her exclusivity contract with DC is for three years.[28]

In late 2016, Jones's work was featured in New Talent Showcase 2016 #1.[29] Between 2016 and 2017, Jones illustrated the four-part series Supergirl: Being Super written by Mariko Tamaki and published by DC Entertainment.[30] On March 30, 2017, DC announced that her artwork would be used as the basis for a new series of statues in their Cover Girls line.[31] As of July 2018, Jones has designed statues of Harley Quinn, Supergirl, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Mera.[32][33]

In July 2017, DC announced that Jones would draw both the covers and interior art of Batman, starting with DC Rebirth Issue 33.[34] She is the first female artist to draw covers and interior pages on more than two consecutive Batman-centric issues in the character's entire publishing history.[24][35] Jones's run begins after Catwoman (aka Selina Kyle) has accepted Batman's marriage proposal. The two travel to Kahndaq in order to request a favor from Holly Robinson, but they face resistance from Talia al Ghul.[36][37][38]

In April 2018, DC announced that Jones will write and draw a new Catwoman series. Issue 1 was released on July 4, 2018, the same day as Batman Issue 50 (the Batman & Catwoman wedding issue).[39][40]
