Biography

Since 1998, Haft has been building companies in China. He has overseen sourcing, contract manufacturing, and import/export programs between American and Chinese enterprises in a variety of manufacturing industries and agriculture.[1]

Haft currently serves as CEO of SafeSource Trading, an export firm that brokers sales of American agricultural products to China. A public-private partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension, SafeSource was founded by a grant from New York State in 2013. He lectures as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service and McDonough School of Business, where he teaches classes on China entrepreneurship and trade.

Prior to his activities in China, Haft was a founding partner of SiteSpecific Inc, an internet advertising agency, ranked in the country's top five by Forrester Research . The company was the subject of the first Harvard Business School case study on Internet marketing, and served a roster of Fortune 500 clients. Haft's work there was recognized by industry awards, including the Clio Awards, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, and Casie. SiteSpecific was acquired by a global marketing communications firm in 1997.

Writing

Haft is the author of All the Tea in China: How to Buy, Sell, and Make Money on the Mainland (Penguin, 2007), which details best practices for importing, exporting, and doing business in China.

His second book, Unmade in China (Polity, 2015) examines America's enduring competitive advantages over China in the coming century. Using firm-level data and recent case studies, Unmade in China tells the story of systemic risk in Chinese manufacturing and why this gives rise to demand for American goods and services, supporting millions of U.S. jobs.

Media and Speaking Appearances

Haft has conducted many briefings about China trade and U.S. competitiveness to members of the US Congress, ambassadors, senior military officers, and the business community.

His analysis has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal,[2] The Financial Times, NPR,[3] CNN,[4] CNBC,[5] and FOX [6] among others. He is a regular contributor to Huffington Post [7]
