Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is an artisan ice-cream company centered in Columbus, Ohio, with national distribution. It is known for its creative flavors and its high-quality ingredients. It has been featured nationally in the press as an artisan ice cream maker, and won two Sofi Awards.

History

In 1996, the first prototype store opened in the North Market area of Columbus called Scream Ice Creams. Britton Bauer opened the store after quitting art studies at The Ohio State University to concentrate on developing artisan desserts. She later received an honorary doctorate in business administration from the university after serving as the commencement speaker at the summer 2016 graduation.[1] [2] Jeni Britton Bauer's interest formed while working at La Chatelaine, a local French bakery, where she experimented with scent combinations making homemade perfume.[3] Britton Bauer served one flavor a day at Scream, but realized, when a coffee shop was out of her favorite orange scone, that such a limited selection could be disappointing for customers.[3] In order to become a better ice cream maker, Britton Bauer decided to attend the ice cream short course at Penn State, and she closed Scream to do so.[3] The first Jeni's opened in 2002, also in the North Market.

In 2012, Jeni's Ice Cream received a sofi Gold Award in the "Dessert or Dessert Topping" category for Lemon Frozen Yogurt.[4] In 2013, Jeni's won another sofi Gold Award in the "Outstanding Product Line" category.[5] Beginning with her early days at Scream and continuing to the present, Britton Bauer's ice cream has incorporated products local to Columbus and Ohio, including milk, fruit, and whiskey.[3][6]

On April 23, 2015, Jeni's initiated a recall of all products due to food safety concerns, due to a possible presence of listeria in their products.[7] Jeni's initiated a second listeria-related recall in June 2015, connected to the first recall.[8] Since 2015, no other similar recalls have been enacted, and Jeni's is considered safe to consume.

Distribution

As of 2018, there are 11 "Scoop Shop" locations in Columbus, Ohio; one in Cleveland, Ohio; six in Nashville, Tennessee; four in Los Angeles, California; five in Chicago, Illinois; two in Atlanta, Georgia; two in the Atlanta-area cities of Decatur and Alpharetta; one in St. Louis, Missouri; one in Charlotte, North Carolina; two in Charleston, South Carolina; and one in Washington, DC. Jeni's Ice Cream is also distributed in high-end groceries and markets nationwide, as well as through mail order.[9]

Jeni’s Ice Cream is served in business class aboard SAS Scandinavian Airlines flights from Boston and San Francisco to Copenhagen.

Reviews

Jeni's Ice Cream received a positive review on the "Hot and Spicy" episode of Food Network's show The Best Thing I Ever Ate (2010).[10] It was reviewed in The Washington Post (2011),[11] The Huffington Post (2012),[12] and US News & World Report who ranked it #1 in America in 2012.[13] The Chicago Tribune (2011) said "Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is gaining a national reputation for producing superior desserts made of milk sourced from a family farm in Ohio's Appalachian region."[14] Time magazine said it "has a large cult following among Ohio émigrés and ice cream geeks."[15] The Atlantic positively reviewed it saying "Jeni's flavors are not successful simply because they are irreverent and ground-breaking. They work because a great deal of effort has gone into their crafting--what at first glance seems whimsical, upon first bite is proven artisanal."[16] It has also been positively reviewed in The New York Times (2011),[17] and by Today (2012).[18] In 2007, the New York Times said Jeni's had "surpassed the creativity of all other ice cream makers with its versions like goat cheese and Cognac fig sauce."[19]

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home was published in 2011 where it was positively reviewed in the Wall Street Journal among other places.[20] It earned Jeni Bauer a James Beard Award (2012) in the " Baking and Dessert" category.[21]
