James M. Wells III (born c. 1948) is an American businessman. He is the former Executive Chairman of the Board of SunTrust Banks Inc..

Early life

James M. Wells III was born circa 1948.[1] He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[1]

Career

Wells joined SunTrust Banks Inc. in 1976.[2] He became its CEO in 2007. As CEO of SunTrust Banks Inc. in 2008, he earned a total compensation of $8,042,275, which included a base salary of $1,077,300, stocks granted of $4,721,150, and options granted of $2,120,000.[3] He was replaced as CEO by William H. Rogers, Jr., on June 1, 2011.

Wells serves as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the Financial Services Roundtable, VISA U.S.A. Inc., the Crestar Financial Corporation, and the Crestar Bank, acquired by SunTrust Banks in 1998.[1][4][5]

Wells is a trustee of the Georgia Research Alliance.[1][6] Since November 2010, he has been the director of Operation HOPE Inc..[1]
