International Ballet Competition and Contest of Choreographers (Moscow)

International ballet competition and contest of choreographers was founded in 1969, and takes place every four years at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.

The competition opened to the world such names such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Julio Bocca, Nadezhda Pavlova, Irek Mukhamedov, Nikolay Tsiskaridze, Alina Cojocaru, Vladimir Malakhov, Andrei Batalov, Ludmila Semenyaka, Andris Liepa, Natalya Osipova, etc.

In 2017 the Organizing Committee of the XIII International ballet competition and contest of choreographers was headed by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Olga Golodets. The Competition celebrated 90-year anniversary of its irreplaceable artistic director and outstanding choreographer of the Bolshoi Theatre Yuri Grigorovich and also preceded The Year of Russian Ballet and the 200-anniversary of Marius Petipa.

The XIII Moscow ballet competition in 2017 announced unprecedented Prizes:  two Grand Prixes for "ballet dancers" and "choreographers" - $100000 each. In Junior group for categories "Soloists" (girls, boys) and "Duets" (girls, boys) the I prize was $20000, II Prize-$10000, III Prize-$5000, and two diplomas $3000 each. In Senior group "Soloists" (female, male) and "Duets" (women, men) awards were as follows: I prize-$30000, II Prize-$20000, III Prize-$10000 and two diplomas of $5000. Among Choreographers the following prizes were announced: I prize-$30000, II Prize-$25000, III Prize-$20000 and three diplomas of $5000 each.

In addition to the world's largest prize fund, XIII Moscow ballet competition was marked by a particularly high number of participants: 278 applicants and only 200 of them were allowed to participate in the contest. There were contestants from 26 countries: Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, GermanyGreat Britain, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, LatviaMexico, MoldovaPanama, Portugal, RussiaSouth Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Tajikistan, Ukraine, United States, Venezuela.

Within the cultural program of the XIII Moscow ballet competition TASS News Agency of Russia with the support of the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation and in conjunction with the competition organizer - the Federal Management of Art Projects "ROSCONCERT" - prepared an exhibition of photos "International ballet competition and contest of choreographers: Turning over the pages of history". The exhibition was held from 8-20 June in Old Arbat Street. Visitors of the exhibition could get acquainted with the history of the famous competition, that has revealed to the world a Galaxy of ballet stars, see rare photographs, selected from the archive of the TASS News Agency, as well as granted by the magazine Ballet.

During the XIII International ballet competition and contest of choreographers the Xth General Assembly of the International Federation of Ballet competitions took place.  The Conference was attended by members of the International Federation of Ballet competitions - representatives of top world IBCs from Berlin, Istanbul, Jackson, Lausanne, Nagoya, New York, Perm, Seoul, Spoleto, Varna; Ballet critics and journalists from Astana, London, New York, Paris, prominent choreographers and teachers, representatives of European Ballet, Ballet representatives from Asia. In 2017, for the first time in the history of competition, viewings were streamed live worldwide by Medici.tv. Thanks to this the Competition had been watched by more than 5 000 000 people from all over the world.

History

The ballet legend Galina Ulanova was the first president of the Jury in 1969. Since 1973 until now Yuri Grigorovich has been the irreplaceable President of the Jury and the Artistic Director of the Competition.

The panel of judges at various times included: Sofia Golovkina, Natalia Kasatkina, Irina Kolpakova, Mikhail Lavrovsky, Maya Plisetskaya, Marina Semyonova, Galina Ulanova, Vladimir Vasiliev and other famous figures of the Russian Ballet; as well as Cyril Atanassoff, Claude Bessy, Yvette Chauviré and Charles Jude (France), Alicia Alonso (Cuba), Arnold Haskell (United Kingdom), Allan Fridericia and Kirsten Ralov (Denmark), Brigitte Kulberg (Sweden), Rudi van Danzig (Netherlands), Robert Joffrey and Natalia Makarova (United States), Dietmar Seifert and Constance Vernon (Germany), Doris Laine (Finland), Julio Bocca (Argentina) and other representatives of the ballet world's elite.

In the history of Moscow Ballet Competition the Grand Prix has yet been awarded to only four dancers: Nadezhda Pavlova (USSR) at the IInd ballet competition in 1973, Irek Mukhamedov (USSR) at the IVth ballet competition in 1981, Andrei Batalov (Russia) at the VIIIth  ballet competition in 1997 and Denis Matvienko (Ukraine) at the Xth ballet competition in 2005 year.

In 2001 year the Competition added the contest of choreographers, where in different years the awardees were: Radu Poklitaru (I prize), Marina Kesler (diploma), Yuri Smekalov (I prize), Emil Faski (diploma), Konstantin Semenov (diploma), Vladimir Varnava (diploma) and etc. Since 2001 and until now the contest is called "International ballet competition and contest of choreographers".

Moscow ballet competition has thrice given tribute to prominent figures of Russian and World ballet art: VII Moscow ballet competition in 1993  was dedicated to choreography of Marius Petipa, IX International ballet competition and contest of choreographers in 2001 was held in honor of the great Galina Ulanova, the XI Moscow ballet competition in 2009 honoured the outstanding Russian ballerina Marina Semyonova.

Activities

During the Competition there works the press center, which covers the life of the contest from its opening to the closing gala.

As part of the contest different meetings, seminars, workshops and exhibitions are held. For the first time The Contest of drawings and essays on the theme of "The Russian ballet" took place among students of primary and secondary schools of  Russian regions within the framework of the XIII international ballet competition and contest of choreographers. The main prize - trip to Moscow and tickets to Bolshoi to watch the final round of the XIII Moscow ballet competition was awarded to 18 contestants. Diplomas were presented to the winners in a festive atmosphere at the Red Lounge of the Bolshoi Theatre.

Project of Andrey Bely "Cinemapoetry" filmed a movie dedicated to the XIII International ballet competition and contest of choreographers, featuring actress Chulpan Khamatova, Bolshoi Theatre Principal Semen Chudin, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre Anastasia Stashkevich.
