Idolish7 (アイドリッシュセブン, Aidorisshu Sebun, stylized as IDOLiSH7) is a Japanese rhythm game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment with music collaboration by Lantis for Android and iOS platforms,[1] which first released in Japan on August 20, 2015. The project features character design by Arina Tanemura.[2] Idolish7 has spawned several manga adaptations and novelizations. An anime adaptation by Troyca premiered in January 2018.[3] The album REGALITY connected to the series became the first album credited to a male in-story character group to top the weekly Oricon Albums Chart.[4]

Plot

The player assumes the role of Tsumugi Takanashi, an inexperienced manager for a new idol group under her father's small agency. The idol group is named "IDOLiSH7," and consists of seven male singers, each with their own unique personality and background. She must train and turn all of them into the famous idols, all the while struggling against the hardships of the entertainment industry.

Characters

IDOLiSH7

A new idol group belonging to Takanashi Production Company. Their names contain numbers 1~7 in kanji. Their music symbols mainly consist of accidentals and dynamics.

Iori Izumi (和泉 一織, Izumi Iori)
Voiced by: Toshiki Masuda[5]
A cool young man with a brilliant mind. Calm and polite, he is able to complete any task flawlessly, but is actually fairly sharp-tongued when he talks. Mitsuki's brother. 17 years old.[6] His music symbol is double flat.
Yamato Nikaidō (二階堂 大和, Nikaidō Yamato)
Voiced by: Yūsuke Shirai[5]
The eldest member of the group who is something of a big brother figure to the other members. Although he appears to have an aloof personality, he is in fact very passionate on the inside, and thinks about the other members of the group more than anyone else. 22 years old.[6] His music symbol is sharp.
Mitsuki Izumi (和泉 三月, Izumi Mitsuki)
Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga[5]
The energetic member of the group who always sets the mood. Despite his cute exterior, he has a chivalrous spirit and is good at taking care of others. Iori's older brother. 21 years old.[6] His music symbol is flat.
Tamaki Yotsuba (四葉 環, Yotsuba Tamaki)
Voiced by: KENN[5]
Tamaki is a slovenly genius, but has great reflexes and his dancing is at a professional level. He moves at his own pace, and is just a little bit loose when it comes to being on time and keeping promises. 17 years old.[6] His music symbol is mezzo piano.
Sōgo Ōsaka (逢坂 壮五, Ōsaka Sōgo)
Voiced by: Atsushi Abe[5]
A nice young man who is earnest and caring. He's able to handle any song and/or dance with no problem. He is kind and gentle to anyone and everyone, but is very scary when angered. 20 years old.[6] His music symbol is mezzo forte.
Nagi Rokuya (弥 ナギ, Rokuya Nagi)
Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi[5]
A young man with half Japanese and half Northern European blood running through his veins, he has natural charisma and good looks. He has a habit of immediately hitting on any girl he sees. His love of women is only challenged by his love of Japanese animation. 19 years old.[6] His music symbol is natural.
Riku Nanase (七瀬 陸, Nanase Riku)
Voiced by: Kenshō Ono[5]
A hard-working young man with stellar singing talent and an honest personality. He's a bit of a push-over who can't refuse someone when they ask something of him, and he's kind of naive when it comes to the real world. 18 years old.[6] His music symbol is double sharp.

TRIGGER

The rival group of Idolish7 that belonged to the Yaotome Production Company. Their names contain numbers 8~10 in kanji. Their music symbols mainly consist of clefs.

Gaku Yaotome (八乙女 楽, Yaotome Gaku)
Voiced by: Wataru Hatano[5]
A young man so popular that he was chosen as "Number One Man I'd Want to Hold Me Tight" by the public. He's very competitive and isn't very nice when he talks, but is in fact cordial and caring when it comes to his teammates. 22 years old.[6] His music symbol is treble.
Ten Kujō (九条 天, Kujō Ten)
Voiced by: Sōma Saitō[5]
He appears to have the personality of a prankster, but he's actually a perfectionist with a high level of professionalism. He strives to be perfect as an idol. 18 years old.[6] His music symbol is alto.
Ryūnosuke Tsunashi (十 龍之介, Tsunashi Ryūnosuke)
Voiced by: Takuya Satō[5]
His sexiness and wild attitude are his selling point, but he's actually very shy and gentle. The gap between his image and his true self often makes him worry. 23 years old.[6] His music symbol is bass.

Re:vale

An idol group that introduced in the second chapter of the game. Their names contain numbers 100 and 1000 in kanji. Their music symbols mainly consist of repeat signs.

Momose Sunohara (春原 百瀬, Sunohara Momose)
Voiced by: Sōichirō Hoshi[5]

Mostly known by his stage name of Momo (), he is the energetic and easy-going member of Re:vale. Momo has a bit of a mischievous side and seems to drag Yuki into his schemes. He is the boke of the pair, constantly making off the wall comments.

Yukito Orikasa (折笠 千斗, Orikasa Yukito)
Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana[5]

Mostly known by his stage name of Yuki (), he is the cool and collected member of Re:vale. Yuki is the tsukkomi of the pair, and follows through with pointing out the idiocy Momo currently has on display.

ŹOOĻ

An idol group that introduced in the third chapter of the game. Their names contain kanji of animals from the chinese zodiacpig, dog, snake and tiger. Their music symbols mainly consist of musical notes with the theme of repetition and silence.

The president of the agency that IDOLiSH7 are a part of. He's kind of spacey, but is very sincere when it comes to work. He watches over the new members of his agency.[6]
Tsumugi Takanashi (小鳥遊 紡, Takanashi Tsumugi)
Voiced by: Satomi Satō[8] (anime)
The main protagonist and Otoharu's one and only daughter. She ends up being given the position of IDOLiSH7's manager, and works hard to try and sell them. She's a strong girl who is positive no matter what comes her way.[6] In the game, player assumes her role and is able to change her name.
Banri Ōgami (大神 万理, Ōgami Banri)
Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu[5]
A talented staff member who keeps the agency running. A very reliable man, he supports the members of IDOLiSH7 and Tsumugi, their new manager.[6]

Prints

The project has released several manga and novel adaptations. A manga adaptation is drawn by Nokoshi Yamada and is serialized in Hakusensha's Hana LaLa Online since 2015.[9] The first volume was released on December 4, 2015.[10] Another manga that focuses on idol group rival of IDOLiSH7, TRIGGER, is titled Idolish7: TRIGGER -Before The Radiant Glory- (アイドリッシュセブン TRIGGER -before The Radiant Glory-).[1] It is written by Bunta Tsushimi with illustrations by Arina Tanemura and was released on December 19, 2016.[11] On October 12, 2017, it was announced that a new manga adaptation by Arina Tanemura titled "Re:member", which will center around on the past of the group Re:vale. The manga launched on December 9, 2017.[12]

A novel titled Idolish7: Ryūsei ni Inoru (アイドリッシュセブン 流星に祈る) is written by Bunta Tsushimi with illustrations by Arina Tanemura.[13][9] It was released on December 4, 2015.[14]

An official fanbook was released on June 30, 2016.[15] The second fanbook was released on August 19, 2016.[16]

Video games

Bandai Namco Entertainment released a tie-in console video game titled IDOLiSH7 Twelve Fantasia! (アイドリッシュセブン Twelve Fantasia!)" for the PlayStation Vita on February 15, 2018. The game's story takes place between the second and third story parts of the smartphone game, focusing on the IDOLiSH7, TRIGGER, and Re:vale groups on a combined tour across Japan. The game's final destination is a concert at Zero Arena.[17]

Anime

An anime adaptation was first announced during a Niconico livestream event on August 19, 2016.[1] The 17-episode anime premiered on January 7, 2018 and concluded on May 19, 2018. Makoto Bessho is directing the anime at Troyca while Ayumi Sekine is supervising the anime's scripts. Kazumi Fukagawa is adapting Arina Tanemura's original designs for animation. Ei Aoki is credited as supervisor.[3] Crunchyroll licensed the series for streaming as the anime simultaneously airs in Japan.[18]

On July 7, 2018, it was announced that IDOLiSH7 has been green-lit for a second season.[19]

IDOLiSH7: Vibrato

In addition to the anime series, it was announced that there will be a spin-off series based on the stories from the manga and novels adaptations.[21] The series of anime shorts, titled "IDOLiSH7: Vibrato", is currently being streamed exclusively on YouTube as a "YouTube Original" on Bandai Visual's official YouTube account, with the "first part" of the shorts focused on TRIGGER.[22] The first episode aired on February 16, 2018.
