Sailor Moon, known in Japan as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, is an anime series adapted from the manga series of the title by Naoko Takeuchi. The series was produced by Toei Animation and directed by Junichi Sato, Kunihiko Ikuhara and Takuya Igarashi and produced by TV Asahi and Toei Animation.[1] The first four seasons were dubbed and released in North America by DIC Entertainment (now DHX Media) and Cloverway. The series concentrates on the adventures of Usagi Tsukino, a schoolgirl who learns that she and several other girls can transform into superheroines, Sailor Senshi, and fight against evil forces that threaten the world: the Dark Kingdom, the Makaiju (for the first 13 episodes of Sailor Moon R), the Black Moon Clan, the Death Busters, the Dead Moon Circus, and Shadow Galactica.
The series aired from March 7, 1992 to February 8, 1997, on TV Asahi in Japan. In addition to the 200 episodes, three feature-length films were produced, as well as five short films. In North America, the episodes aired from August 28, 1995 to December 21, 2000, on YTV in Canada, and in first-run syndication (and later on Cartoon Network) in the United States.
The first two seasons of the series, Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R, were sold across 20 VHS volumes in Japan in 1995, and by the end of that year, each volume had sold more than 300,000 copies.[2] In 2001, ADV Films released the English dubs of the first two seasons to 20 VHS volumes.[3] The first two English language seasons were released on 14 Region 1 DVDs in 2002 by ADV.[4] ADV also released subtitled and uncensored and uncut versions of the first two seasons in two separate Limited Edition DVD box sets in 2003.[4] Pioneer Entertainment released both edited and unedited versions of the third and fourth seasons, Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon Super S respectively, on DVD and VHS in 2001 and 2002.[4][5] In 2004, the international rights to the series expired.[6]
At the start of Sailor Moon S, the episode numbers for the dub were adjusted by YTV to match those of the original Japanese version.[7] There had previously been a gap in numbering because of the seven episodes that had been cut or merged in the previous two seasons. Because of this, episode numbers 83-89 were never used for the dub. However, in the United States, 83-89 were used for the dub on Cartoon Network, and did not match those of the original Japanese version.
On May 16, 2014, the entire anime series (all 200 TV episodes, all three movies, and the TV specials) was re-licensed for an updated English-language release by Viz Media.

| As the series begins as a slapstick comedy, a 14-year-old underachieving sailor-suited schoolgirl Usagi Tsukino saves a cat from being attacked by a group of little boys while on her way to school. After school, she and her friend Naru Osaka visit a local jewelry store owned by her mother. On her way home, Usagi encounters Mamoru Chiba and meets up with Motoki Furuhata. Upon returning to her home, Naru's mother reveals herself to be the youma Morga and captures her. The cat Usagi encountered earlier reveals herself as Luna and tells Usagi to search for the princess and destroy evil. Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon and, after hearing Naru in distress, confronts Morga, who intends to steal human energy by using the cursed jewelry on the girls. The youma tricks the brainwashed girls into attacking Usagi but a stranger wearing a tuxedo intervenes. Usagi weakens Morga with her screams, allowing her to use the Moon Tiara Action technique on Morga, killing her and restoring the girls to normal. | Having failed his previous mission, Jadeite informs Queen Beryl, the leader of the Dark Kingdom, that he is using another plan, this time involving fortune telling. Meanwhile, Usagi's classmate Umino Gurio is smitten with her. After confessing that he wants to go on a date, Naru has him consult a fortune teller but he decides to go to the House of Fortune. Luna tells Usagi to go to a fortune teller, in an attempt to check that Motoki is an admirer of her but decides to go to the House of Fortune. However, Umino and some of the other students are hypnotized by the tarot cards and cause trouble at school the next day. Realizing that the students were being hypnotized from the House of Fortune, Luna and Usagi infiltrate the house and encounter Balm, a youma disguised as the fortune teller. Balm orders her hypnotized subjects to attack Usagi, but Tuxedo Mask distracts her and, with his encouragement, Usagi kills Balm, returning the customers to normal. | ||||||||

Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts head to the North Pole to end the Negaverse. They are confronted by Queen Beryl’s Doom and Gloom Girls who capture all the Sailor Scouts leaving Sailor Moon all alone. Afterwords, Beryl summons Sailor Moon to her where Sailor Moon battles with Darien, who is under a strong brainwashing spell by Beryl. Unwilling to hurt Darien, Sailor Moon uses their locket and convinces him to touch it, which breaks the spell. Upset at losing Darien, Beryl attacks them only to be thwarted by Darien’s rose. Wounded by the rose, Beryl retreats and gets powered up by the Negaverse and turned into Super Beryl. Sailor Moon confronts Beryl and the two battle. Now as Princess Serena, she calls on the other Sailor Scouts to help her, who teleport to her side and together they defeat Beryl and the Negaverse. However, the power of Sailor Moon’s attack causes her and the other Sailor Scouts to no longer remember they are Sailor Scouts, their battle with Beryl, each other or their past lives and they are living their lives as normal girls. Note: This episode is a combination of scenes from episodes 45 and 46. The deaths of the Sailor Guardians, Sailor Moon, Prince Endymion, the conversation with the spirits of the Sailor Guardians and Usagi’s wish to be a normal girl and the revival of all the Guardians and Endymion, are edited out shorting the two episodes enough to combine them into one. | ||||||||

Wiseman tricks her, giving her a false crown, which transforms her into a huge dragon, in order to distract Sailor Moon from his real purpose. In the end the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask unleash attacks on the apparently invincible dragon — still not recognizing it as Esmeraude in disguise, and then Sailor Moon unleashes Moon Princess Halation. The dragon disintegrates and becomes Esmeraude, seemingly asleep. Esmeraude disappears, screaming, into a vortex and vanishes into nothing, ending her life. Wiseman laughs and reflects on his gladness at her departure, and then reveals that Saphir and Prince Demande will be "joining" Esmeraude. An eerily familiar laugh echoes around the room. | ||||||||

| Avoiding their study group, Usagi and Minako meet Haruka Tenou, an attractive and supposedly male student of a prestigious local school, with whom they both become infatuated. After Minako is defeated in a racing game, Michiru arrives to pick up Haruka, and the two depart with Usagi and Minako soon following behind them. Once Michiru and Haruka separate at a mechanic's shop, Usagi and Minako take this as their chance, and Haruka tells them about "him"-self until a Daimon arrives to attack Kameda, the shop mechanic. The Daimon starts to escape when Usagi and Minako transform into their Guardian forms to chase it down, when Uranus and Neptune arrive to investigate Kameda's pure heart crystal. When it turns out not to be a talisman they retreat and Sailor Moon defeats the Daimon. Later, the rest of the girls are at Crown Game Center with Usagi and Minako in hopes of seeing the cute boy they'd told them about; Michiru arrives with a blonde girl, whom Usagi and Minako initially fail to realize is Haruka; once they do, Minako falls to the ground in anguish, and Haruka notes that she'd never said she was male. | ||||||||

| Chibiusa attempts to use the Golden Crystal to destroy Queen Nehelenia and the Dead Moon Circus but is captured and knocked unconscious. When Sailor Moon gets to Nehelenia on the floating platform, she sees that Queen Nehelenia's aged appearance as a result of Chibiusa's use of the Golden Crystal. Nehelenia explains that she was once queen of an asteroid and she was worshiped for her beauty by her people until she asked her dream mirror if she would stay beautiful forever. But upon seeing the ugly, old woman she would become, Nehelenia consumed her servants' Dream Mirrors, turning them into Lemures while retaining her youth and beauty, and was consequently sealed away by Queen Serenity. With Sailor Moon pities her, an infuriated Nehelenia throws Chibiusa over the edge of the platform. Sailor Moon dives after her and transforms into Princess Serenity; she catches up to Chibiusa, awakens her, and together they use the Golden Crystal to land safely on Earth. At that time, Nehelenia reseals herself back into the mirror to regain her beauty as it flies off. Chibiusa says goodbye to Helios, who returns to his homeworld of Elysion, and says that she will see him in her dreams. | ||||||||

Sailor Lead Crow threatens the lives of bystanders with a black hole. Usagi allows her silver Star Seed to be taken, but Sailor Tin Nyanko attacks Lead Crow, who drops the black hole, gets sucked in, and dies. Usagi and Chibi Chibi are swallowed by it as well, but the power of the incense burner Chibi Chibi produces destroys the black hole. Seeing all the Star Seeds that Galaxia has been gathering, Eternal Sailor Moon recognize one of them to be Mamoru's. She instead heals Sailor Galaxia, and gives her the strength to expel Chaos entirely from her body, an act which returns darkness to the hearts and minds of all life, where it belongs together with the Light of Hope. After the battle, everyone returns to life, including Mamoru and Princess Kakyuu, very much to Usagi's and the Starlights' joy and happiness. The Starlights and Princess Kakyuu bid their goodbyes and leave to their home planet. The anime ends with Usagi and Mamoru kissing under a large full moon. | ||||||
Shorts
Two short episodes were created to be shown with the first and third theatrical films of the Sailor Moon anime. The first, entitled "Make Up! Sailor Soldier", is a comical introduction to the cast of the series for those not familiar with the franchise, while the second, "Ami's First Love", is an adaptation of an extra story (omake) from the Sailor Moon manga.[10]
The latter three shorts, collectively called the "SuperS Specials", were released together, airing in lieu of a regular episode near the beginning of the SuperS season. The first short, "SuperS Special: An Elegant Metamorphosis? Crybaby Usagi's Growth Diary", is a summary of the first three seasons of the Sailor Moon series. The second short, "SuperS Special: Haruka and Michiru, Again! The Ghostly Puppet Show", features Haruka and Michiru in a luxury hotel on a cliff. In the third short, "SuperS Special: Chibiusa's Adventure! The Dreaded Vampire Castle", Chibiusa uncovers one of her classmates as a monster and fights it with the other Sailor Senshi.
In 2014, Viz Media licensed the shorts for an English language release in North America.

A being named the Terayoka, a woman who feeds on the desires of others, notices this and attaches herself to Ami. Later, Ami is in bed sick, as the Terayoka is finishing her magic. Ami suddenly overcomes it, transforms into Sailor Mercury, and defeats the Terayoka, believing she was Mercurius. However, an investigation by the other Senshi reveal that Mercurius looks almost exactly like Umino. | ||
