Heinrich Altherr

Heinrich Altherr (April 11, 1878 in Basel – April 27, 1947 in Zurich) was a Swiss painter. He painted numerous murals in churches and in public buildings.

In 1913 he became a teacher at the art academy in Stuttgart, and a few years later became the director (1919–1921). There he taught image structure and composition, and he remained there until 1939, when he returned to Zurich. Only two years earlier, the ruling national socialist party had called his work part of the so-called degenerate arts.

Some of Heinrich Altherr's murals can be seen at the University of Zurich and St. Paul's Church in Basel. His style is expressionist, and his themes are often politically or socially critically oriented.
