Guido Stempel

Guido H. Stempel III (August 13, 1928-May 31, 2016) was a distinguished professor of journalism at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, and directed school in the 1970s.

Early life

Stempel was an American journalism professor and researcher. Stempel was born to Guido H. Jr. and Alice Menninger Stempel, who lived in Bloomington, Indiana. Guido III spent his childhood in Pittsburgh before later returning to Bloomington.

Education

After his return to Bloomington, Indiana, Stempel went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Indiana University. He then became the first doctoral candidate for mass communication at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Career life and accomplishments

Stempel's prolific publishing career began in Journalism Quarterly in 1952, “Sampling Size for Classifying Subject Matter in Dailies”. From 1972-1989, Stempel was said to be the longest-serving editor of the Journalism Quarterly. With the advancements in his career and the amount of research in mass communication and journalism became major factors in Ohio University choosing him in the first round for the Ohio Board of Regents’ Outstanding Programs Awards. In 2013, he was honored with an award in his name by Ohio University. Stempel received many awards during his lifetime as well. 2007-Paul H Deutschmann Award of Excellence 2004-Harold L. Nelson Award 1994-Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award 1989- AEJMC’s Eleanor Blum Award for Distinguished service for research 1977-Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Service in Profession of Journalism From 1972-1979, Stempel served as Ohio University’s journalism director.

Personal life

Guido Stempel married Anne and had two sons, Ralph Stempel and Carl Stempel and a daughter, Jane Stempel Arata, along with three grandchildren. Alex and Derrick Stempel and Chelsea Arata.

Retirement

Stempel retired in 2002 from his position as journalism professor at Ohio University . He continued to direct Ohio University's Scripps Survey Research Center. He would go on to write articles published by the Athens Messenger, continuing to share his knowledge with the journalism world. As an active church member, Stempel went on to serve as a camp counselor in Pennsylvania.

Death

Guido Stempel died May 31, 2016, at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus. He was 87.
