Grinder Blues is a hard rock blues trio that features Doug Pinnick of King's X, guitarist and vocalist Jabo Bihlman and Scot "Little" Bihlman on drums, percussion and vocals.[1]

History

The trio’s debut self-titled album was released through Megaforce Records on October 14, 2014 and was described as “a shot of adrenaline to the heart of the genre”.[1] The album was produced by Miles Fulwider and Barry Mork and written collaboratively by the band. According to Guitar World magazine, Pinnick aimed to keep the music “simple and fun” while exploring new directions. The lyrics are traditional, an homage to their blues heroes.[2]

The band garnered excitement for the launch of their album by premiering the video for “Burn the Bridge” on Revolver.com on September 15, 2014. Bassist-vocalist Pinnick said, “I love the video! It happened so fast, it was fun, no stress.” And Drummer Bihlman said, “The making this video was a blast. We wrote this blues/rock song to be straight to the point. There is definitely no fat structurally to cut away on this tune. Heavy riff, and heavy topic. We filmed it in Los Angeles at a cool warehouse that set the tone for the song. For the look of the video I added a 32 inch kick drum that is big, proud, and fits the production of the record. The sound is massive! We all agreed that we wanted to push a lot of air, on this record, and kept it very raw.”[3]

When asked by the Alternation Nation site about how Grinder Blues compares to King's X musically, Pinnick responded, "It’s a totally different animal, because with King’s X, everything is very…well, I pour my heart out in King’s X. I cut myself and bleed for everybody, and just tell everybody how I feel. I just throw my heart out there. With Grinder Blues, we got together for fun. Lyrically, nothing deep. Just to get up there and have some drinks and have some fun, and play the blues. And so that’s the difference for me. And with Ty and Jerry, we play a bit more complicated music and a bit more demanding music – both vocally and bass playing wise. And all three of us do that – we work really hard for the money. With Grinder Blues, this is a no-brainer for me. I can just do this and have fun – without thinking. I like that."[4]

Grinder Blues supported the album with a West Coast tour that kicked off October 16, 2014 at the Viper Room in Los Angeles and hit such cities as San Diego and Corona.[5]

The Grinder Blues album was a hit among fans and critics alike. It debuted at #8 on The Billboard Charts the week of October 27, 2014[6] and was described by Vintage Guitar magazine as “A highly enjoyable blues-rock record with a plethora of grooves, down-and-dirty feel, filthy guitar, and soul-stirring vocals.”[7]

In September 2017, the trio launched a European tour.
