Gairkata (also spelled Goyerkata or Gayarkata) is a census town in the Jalpaiguri district, located within the state of West Bengal, India. It is the native village of prominent Bengali writer Samaresh Majumdar, poet and journalist Bikash Sarkar and CPI leader Samar Ganguly. Gairkata, home to Gosaihat Eco-Park (located in the Gairkata-Moraghat Range), features Telipara as its main industrial hub. An NGO named Aaranyak is also located in Gairkata.

Geography

Gairkata is located at 26°41′N 89°02′E / 26.68°N 89.03°E / 26.68; 89.03.[1]; on the route of Asian Highway 48 and the major junction from Phuentsholing to Changrabandha. Gairkata is located in the middle of the Dhupguri block.

Demographics

In the 2001 India census, Gairkata had a total population of 8713. At that time, males constituted approximately 51% of the population, whereas females consisted of 49% of the overall population. [2]

Gairkata is identified as a census town in the district of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. The Gairkata census town has a population of 7,577 of which 3,827 are males and 3,750 females, according to the report released by Census India in 2011. This report also indicated that there were 749 children aged 6 or younger (9.89%).

In Gairkata, the female sex ratio is 980 compared to the state average of 950. Additionally, Gairkata's child gender ratio is approximately 997 compared to West Bengal's average of 956. In Gairkata, male literacy is around 85.83% while the female literacy rate is 75.33%. 2,908 of the total population (2,215 males and 693 females) were engaged in work or business activity. Of the total 2908 working population, 82.32% were engaged in what was classified as "main work" while 17.68% of total workers were engaged in what was classified as "marginal work".

Gairkata census town has total administration over 1,749 houses, to which it supplies basic amenities such as water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within Census Town limits and impose taxes on properties under its jurisdiction.

Caste Factor Gairkata (CT) of Jalpaiguri has a substantial population of Schedule Caste. Schedule Caste (SC) constitutes 31.38% while Schedule Tribe (ST) were 17.08% of total population in Gairkata (CT). [3]
