Glasgow Lions

The Glasgow Lions were the first amateur American football team to be founded in Scotland. They were founded in 1984, and disbanded after the 1996 season owing to a competitive imbalance in their league.

In 1985 they played the Edinburgh Eagles, beating them 29-12 in an away game at Meadowbank Stadium, in front of a crowd of 3,471. This was the first intercity game of American football in Europe.

Their semi-contact junior flag football program continued beyond that point, playing until 2001, still dominating Scottish football. On 1 November 1987 the Glasgow Lions Junior Squad, Champions of Scotland, travelled to Leicester to play the Leicester Panthers in the 'Battle of Britain', the first international junior kitted match ever. The Junior Lions won the match.
