George Stephen Goodspeed

George Stephen Goodspeed (1860 - 1905) was an American historian and author.

He specialized in Assyriology and Sumerian history

Life

He was born on 14 January 1860 in Janusville, Wisconsin.[1]

His son Thomas Harper Goodspeed went on to become a botanist.

He died in 1905.

Career

He graduated from Brown University in 1880.[2]

He briefly taught at the University of Chicago.[3] He was a contemporary of James Henry Breasted. He was a regular contributor to the Biblical World magazine.[4]

He is notable for being the first person to introduce the term Crescent of Civilization which is now widely used to describe Mesopotamia,
