Garrison Cadet College Kohat

Garrison Cadet College Kohat is a boarding school, situated in the suburb of Kohat City. Students are inducted after a 3-step selection process, composed of a written test, interview and medical examination. The entrance exam of class 8th is conducted at test centers in Kohat, Mardan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan, D.I.Khan, Sialkot and Karachi. The entrance exam of class 11th is conducted in Kohat.

History

It was established as Kohat Garrison College.Later it was renamed as Garrison Cadet College Kohat after the approval of the then Chief of Army staff General Pervez Musharraf. Land was provided by the Pakistan Army. Foundation stone of the college was laid on March 1, 1990 by the then Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. On Completion of basic infrastructure, classes were started in 1993. Lt-Gen Arif Bangash formally inaugurated college on May 10, 1993. College is run by an Army officer of Brigadier rank who is secretary to Chairman Board of Governors (GOC 9 Division, Kohat). All decisions are taken by principal whose decision cannot be challenged in any court of law.

First Principal of the college was Col. Idrees Niazi (Retd) who remained in college from September 1992 to December 1995. Brig Talat Imtiaz Naqvi (Retd) was second Principal from December 1995 to December 2001. Brig. Tariq Saeed is third Principal of the college since March 25, 2002.

Each house has a House Master and a House Tuter which look after the cadets of house. They keep eyes on their cadets 24 hours. They select Cadets for various activities. Recommend their cadets for Appointments.House masters are assisted by a House Commander (student of FscII) and two section commanders (FscI). Each house has a Drill Instructor, a house Baba, a medical superintendent.

Garrison Cadet College Kohat, has been established by HQ 9th Infantry Division, Kohat. The College is under the control and management of a Board of Governors, headed by General Officer Commanding 9th Infantry Division. Tenure of each member is three years.

Student life

Students attending Garrison Cadet College, Kohat, are called cadets.

The college prepares boys for the secondary school and intermediate examinations conducted by the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Islamabad.Some cadets study for Matriculation or F.Sc(both pre-medical and pre-engineering). English, Urdu, Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are compulsory at each level; some other subjects (e.g. computer science) are offered only in class 8th.

Fitness activities include gymnastics, jogging and athletics. Physical training (PT) is conducted in the morning and sports in the evening. Cadets take part in sports such as basketball, field hockey, football, horse riding, squash, swimming, tennis, badminton, table tennis and volleyball. Students are also taught drill. Some extra activities like Paragliding and Archery are also available. An obstacle course is present to develop cadets’ skill for test at ISSB.

Classes are conducted in the morning and preps (individual silent study periods) at night.

Houses

Garrison Cadet College Kohat consists of six houses Seena, Ghazali, Zangi, Ayubi, Kayani and Jinnah named after great Muslim leaders and scholars Ibn Sīnā, Imam Al-Ghazali, Nur ad-Din Zangi, Sultan Salah-al-Din Yusuf ibn-Ayyub, Justice (R) Rustam Kiyani and Muhammad Ali Jinnah respectively. Each house is administered by a House Warden and a House Tutor. Each house has a Junior and Senior Section Commander and a House commander. These commanders are selected by the Principal, House Warden and House Tutors.Each house has its own mess, libraby and common room where cadets are given lectures by House Warden and House Tutor.

Mosque

The College Mosque is the center of all religious activities. It has the capacity to accommodate about 2000 Namazies at a time. Besides the daily 5 times prayers, Jumma Prayers, Travih Prayers, in Ramadan, are offered in this beautiful mosque. Moreover, other religious functions like Eid-Milad-un-Nabi, Shab-e-Barat, 27 Ramadan- etc are also performed here. A regular Khateeb and Moazzan (both Hafiz-e-Quran) have been appointed for said purposes.

Medical facilities

The college has an M.l. Room, stocked with necessary medicines and equipment. Two nursing assistants are present in the college round the clock and look after the health problems and minor ailments of the cadets. Routine medical care and immediate first aid is provided to the cadets in the college Ml. Room. A qualified MBBS doctor visits college every evening and checks the sick cadets. Cases requiring specialized treatment are referred to CMH Kohat or Civil Hospital Kohat. Cadets requiring special attention are shown to the specialists. Specialist’s fee and hospital expenditures (in case of admission) are included in the bills of the cadets. Cadets suffering from serious diseases are either admitted in CMH Kohat or sent to their homes for the treatment through their parents.
