The Friant class was a class of protected cruisers of the French Navy. The class comprised Friant, Bugeaud and Chasseloup Laubat.

Design

The ships of the class were 94 metres (308 ft 5 in) long, had a beam of 12.98 metres (42 ft 7 in), a draught of 6.3 metres (20 ft 8 in), and had a displacement of 3,982 ton. The ships were equipped with 2 shaft reciprocating engines, which were rated at 9,500 ihp (7,100 kW) and produced a top speed of 18.7 knots (34.6 km/h).

The ships had deck armour of 1.2 in (3.0 cm), turret armour of 2 in (5.1 cm), conning tower armour of 3 in (7.6 cm) and a complement 339 men. The main armament of the ships were six 16 cm (6.3 in) single turret guns. Secondary armament included four single 10 cm (3.9 in) guns and four 4.7 cm (1.9 in) single guns.
