Franz Adam Karrer

Franz Adam Karrer, born 1672 in Solothurn, died 1741 in Paris, was a Swiss officer, brigadier in French service, founder and first colonel-proprietor of the Swiss regiment de Karrer. Married to Jeanne Marguerite de Voile, daughter of a bailiff in Alsace. Knight of the Order of Saint Louis 1709.

Military career

Karrer became 1686 officer cadet in an independent company in French service; ensign 1691 in the Swiss regiment von Salis-Soglio in French service; lieutenant 1693; captain-lieutenant 1698; commanding officer of a half-company 1698; proprietor of a half-company 1709; captain of grenadiers 1710. Karrer entered in 1719 a capitulation with the King of France, raising a regiment of foot for French service, the Régiment de Karrer, becoming colonel in 1720, and brigadier in 1734. In 1736 he transferred the proprietorship of the regiment to his son Ludwig Ignaz Karrer.
