Fergal O'Byrne

Fergal O'Byrne (born 17 May 1966) is a Dublin-born writer, now living in Copenhagen. Currently working on Just Kill Me with Rainer Kiebat as Producer. Fergal has been writing for screen, stage and radio for over 20 years and it became his full-time career in 2013. He has won awards for his stage plays; A Dragon’s Tale (Winner: Eamon Keane Award 2013), Folie-a-Deux (Runner up Listowel 2015) and Extremophiles (NEWvember Festival 2017, Winner: Eamon Keane Award 2018, Longlisted Papatango Prize 2018). He has also written four radio plays broadcast by RTE Radio. Fergal is resident writer with Wytao Films, working with his long-time friend and collaborator, the actor, director and producer William Morgan.[1]

Fergal’s most notable work in TV and Film includes the sitcom Hipsterverse (2016), Season One of which was screened on the TAG and Sonifi channels in the US. Short films include the award-winning Eyes Wide Open (2017 Silver Screen Award Nevada, Miami, Berlin Festivals) Ribeye (2016 Semi-Finalist PAGE International Screenwriting Awards), Bio (2016 Official Selection Miami, Los Angeles, Antwerp and Dublin Film Festivals) and Glass Ceiling (2014 Quarter-Finalist PAGE International Screenwriting Awards). His feature screenplay Shem was a Finalist in the Amsterdam Film Festival. TV drama scripts Clean Slate and Minefield have been shortlisted by BBC’s Scriptroom.

2018 will see Fergal collaborate with creative partner Rainer Kiebat (Producer) on the crime series Just Kill Me. The Filmbase/RTE production of his award-winning script Propeller will also be released in 2018.

Fergal was a winner of the Hennessey Short Story writing awards in 1997, which led to the publication, in 2000, of his debut novel Trolley Ride in Manhattan (Mentor Books). His short story Silvercup was shortlisted for the inaugural Colm Toibin International Short Story Competition.

Fergal was educated at Synge Street, CBS in Dublin and attained a degree in Electronic Engineering from DIT, Kevin Street, College of Technology. He currently lives in Copenhagen with his Danish wife Maiken and their twin daughters.
