"Favor the Bold" is the 129th episode of the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the fifth episode of the sixth season.

This had Nielsen ratings of 6 points, which was about 5.9 million viewers when it was broadcast on television in October 1997.[1]

This brings together many of the narratives that continued over the previous episodes, including the situation at Deep Space Nine station and the Federation forces trying to stop the Dominion.[2] The next episode, "Sacrifice of Angels" is a sequel to this two-parter.[3]

For the last six episodes, Deep Space Nine space station has been administered by the Dominion-Cardassian alliance instead of the Federation, leaving Quark, Rom, Kira, and Odo to contend with Dukat and Weyoun. Meanwhile Sisko and the other Starfleet members (Worf, Dax, O'Brien, Bashir) engage Dominion-Cardassian alliance that has been left in the Alpha Quadrant. An advanced minefield has closed off travel through the wormhole during this period. The episode has a tour de force of guest stars, including Barry Jenner as Admiral Ross and many other characters such as Ziyal, Garak, Damar. Special effects abound and there are visual effects for Starbase 375, the USS Defiant, and a variety of relevant spacecraft of the Star Trek franchise.

Plot

Captain Benjamin Sisko decides to retake Deep Space Nine in order to bolster sagging Federation morale. He plans a large force in order to do so but it will take some time. The Klingons are unwilling to commit a large force, so General Martok and Worf must leave to convince the High Council.

Rom faces execution for attempting to foil the plan to destroy the self-replicating mine-field. This field is the only thing keeping Dominion reinforcements from showing up through the wormhole. It will take about a week before the field can be eliminated.

While Kira and Quark work on a plan to warn the Federation of the pending destruction of the minefield, Jake reveals to them how he gets messages out: through Morn, who delivers the message as he is going home to visit his mother. Sisko realizes he must take the station now, though his fleet is nowhere near large enough.

While all this is going on, Odo's loyalties become confused and Tora Ziyal, daughter of Gul Dukat becomes entangled in station politics and policy decisions.

With a fleet consisting of 600 vessels, Sisko arrives near Deep Space Nine facing a Cardassian-Dominion fleet of 1254 ships. He turns to his crew and says "There's an old saying: 'Fortune favors the bold'. I guess we're about to find out." as the operation begins.

Connections

This is the first of a diptych, the next being Sacrifice of Angels (the episode ends with "To Be Continued..."). This wraps a story arc that began in previous season's finale, Call to Arms, forming one of a connected series of six episodes from the start of this season.[4]

Reception

"Favor the Bold" was rated as the 5th best episode in Season 6 by Nerd Infinite.[5] Favor the Bold had some of the highest Nielsen ratings in Season 6, along with "Sacrifice of Angels" and "You are Cordially Invited...".[6]
