The mallee typically grows to a height of 4 to 7 metres (13 to 23 ft) and has light grey-brown bark that is flaky and shedding at the base.[1] The tree forms a lignotuber. The concolorous, glossy, green adult leaves have a blade with a linear to narrow-lanceolate shape that is around 4.5 to 10 centimetres (1.8 to 3.9 in) in length and 0.6 to 1.7 cm (0.24 to 0.67 in) wide.[2] It blooms between March and May producing white flowers.[1]

Classification

The species was first formally described by the botanist Clifford David Boomsma in 1975 in the work Three new species of the genus Eucalyptus from South Australia as published in South Australian Naturalist.[3]

The type specimen as collected by J.Johnson in 1967 from 125 kilometres (78 mi) east of Serpentine Lake in South Australia.[2]

E. eremicola is part of the Eucalyptus subgenus Symphyomyrtus section Bisectae and subsection Destitutae'. It is part of the same subseries (Oleaginae) as Eucalyptus kochii, Eucalyptus longissima and Eucalyptus ultima.

The species name is taken from the Greek word eremi meaning desert and the latin word cola meaning dweller.[2]

There are two recognised subspecies:

  • Eucalyptus eremicola subsp. eremicola[4]
  • Eucalyptus eremicola subsp. peeneri

Distribution

It is found on sandplains and dunes in the Mid West and Goldfields-Esperance regions of Western Australia where it grows in loamy-sandy soils.[1] It is found in the Great Victoria Desert region of South Australia and Western Australia and the north west of the Little Sandy Desert.[2]
