Ersatz is a German loanword in English which refers to substitutes. Ersatz usually implies a substitute of inferior quality, such as ersatz coffee. In German usage, it may mean a substitute of equal or superior quality (for example, a naval ship under construction may be assigned the Ersatz name of the ship it replaces, until commissioned under its final name).
