Engal Veettu Mahalakshmi is a 1957 Indian, Tamil language drama film and directed by Adurthi Subba Rao. The film featured Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Savithri in the lead roles.[3]

The film is based on Sharat Chandra Chatterjee's Bengali novel Nishkruti which was simultaneously remade as Telugu Movie Thodi Kodallu (1957); both the movies are made simultaneously by same banner & director and some of the scenes & artists are same in both versions.

Plot

The movie revolves around a Joint family with its many problems and advantages and explicitly show how some people take advantage of the situation to create confusion. But Unity is Strength is the principal motivating factor. Lawyer Ganapathi (S. V.Ranga Rao) and his wife Annapurna (Kannamba) are the eldest members of a family. His brother Subbu (K. A. Thangavelu) and his wife Anusuya (M. S. Sundaribai) live in the village. The duo treats their cousin brother Gopu (A. Nageswara Rao), who is an idealist, as their own sibling. Annapurna is a chronic patient so Gopu's wife Susheela (Savitri) takes care of the family. Jealous of the bonding between Annapurna and Susheela, Anusuya creates a rift between them. Gopu and Susheela move to the village. Gopu propounds cooperative farming and prospers. Vaikuntham (M. N. Nambiar), the family's rice mill manager, and their distant relative starts spreading his evil influence over the family by taking the gullible Subbu into the bad company which leads Anusuya to repent for her deeds. Gopu fights for the family and brings about the evil-doings of Vaikuntam to the notice of Ganapathi. The story ends on a happy note with Gopu and Susheela return to the joint family.

Production

The film was produced by D. Madhusudhana Rao under his own banner Annapurna Pictures and was directed by Adurthi Subba Rao who also did the editing. The story was based on Sharat Chandra Chatterjee's Bengali novel Nishkruti. Dialogues were penned by Sridhar. Cinematography was handled by P. S. Selvaraj. S. Krishna Rao was in charge of Art direction while A. K. Chopra handled the choreography. The film was also made in Telugu with the title Thodi Kodallu.

Soundtrack

Music was composed by Master Venu. Lyrics were penned by Udumalai Narayana Kavi, A. Maruthakasi and K. S. Gopalakrishnan. Singer is K. A. Thangavelu and playback singers are Ghantasala, T. M. Soundararajan, Seerkazhi Govindarajan, S. C. Krishnan, P. Suseela, Jikki, T. V. Rathinam and K. Rani.[4]
