eExtra

eExtra is a South African digital satellite television channel which replaced the defunct eKasi+ channel on OVHD offering a variety of premium entertainment in HD including sitcoms, drama series, reality, telenovelas, court shows, lifestyle and movies.

History

eExtra was announced on Friday 3 March, 2017 as a replacement for OpenView HD's flagship channel eKasi+ in direct response to the feedback from viewers who wanted more series, according to e.tv's GM: Group Content Services, Ziyanda Mngomezulu.

The channel went live on Saturday 1 April, 2017, at 05h00, broadcasting 24 hours. It was added to DStv on 17 May, 2017, along with three other e.tv channels: eMovies (Channel 138), eMovies Extra (Channel 140) and eToonz (Channel 311).

Programming

eExtra broadcasts sitcoms, drama series, reality, telenovelas, court shows, lifestyle and movies.

The channel offers more series and movies than its predecessor, with predominantly international shows. At launch, some of the titles broadcast were House, Mayday, Burn Notice and Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce.

Afrikaans Content (Kuier Tyd)

On 1 October 2018, eExtra rolled out Afrikaans content from 19:00 to 21:00. This comes before the launch of the new news channel, OpenNews on 1 November 2018.

Gebroke Harte

An Afrikaans dub of the Turkish telenovela, Paramparca, (Broken Pieces). Broadcasts weekdays from 19:00 to 20:00.

Nuusdag Om 8

An Afrikaans news programme. Sports journalist Echbert Boezak will be the editor and sports reporter. Rozanne McKenzie, Sue Pyler and Suzaan Steyn will be news anchors and Lorna Greyling will be the weather presenter. Airs from 20:00 to 20:30

Nuusdag Perspektief

A companion show to Nuusdag Om 8, in the form of a half-hour Afrikaans current affairs show. Charlene Lackay and Elvin Presslin will interview newsmakers and discuss big news stories and issues. Airs from 20:30 to 21:00.
