Daniel Baker, known professionally as Desus Nice, is a Jamaican-American comedian, TV personality, YouTube personality and Twitter personality.[1] He rose to prominence with Complex TV's Desus vs. Mero, which was a 46-episode podcast that was first released on December 18, 2013.[2][3][4] He is the co-host of Viceland's Desus & Mero talk show alongside The Kid Mero.

Early life

Baker was born in The Bronx, New York City to Jamaican immigrant parents and he grew up in the Wakefield section of The Bronx. He attended the nearby Pablo Casals Middle School in Co-op City, where he met Chris Hayes, before going on to attend Herbert H. Lehman High School and then earn a degree in literature from the College of Mount Saint Vincent. He worked several jobs before joining Black Enterprise as a small business columnist, where he remained until 2014 before leaving to pursue a career in television.[1]

Career

In December 2014, MTV announced that Desus and The Kid Mero would be joining the cast of Guy Code for season 5, along with 11 other new cast members.[5][6] They appeared on the first episode of season 5 which was originally aired on January 14, 2015. After building a relationship with MTV and MTV2, Desus and Mero appeared on other shows including Uncommon Sense and Joking Off.[7]

On 12 September 2015, Desus along with co-host The Kid Mero (a.k.a. The Bodega Boys) released the first episode of the world's most illustrious podcast, The Bodega Boys podcast. Recorded every week at Red Bull Studios NYC, the duo give their irreverent yet hilarious takes on all things pop culture.

On August 30, 2016, Viceland announced “Desus & Mero” which premiered on October 17, 2016. The half-hour show ran Monday-Thursday, hosted by the Bronx-reared comedic duo.[8][9] Its finale aired on June 28, 2018 in preparation for Desus & Mero's upcoming Showtime program set to begin in 2019. [10]

Aliases

Desus goes by numerous aliases on the Bodega Boys Podcast. These aliases are based on references to pop culture, sports, and hip hop. The long and ever-changing list of aliases or "AKAs" are one of the many running gags on the show. During an interview with Method Man on Desus & Mero, Desus explained that the idea for aliases was based on the alter-egos of the rappers in the song "Wu-Gambinos" on the album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... by Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon.
