Das Boot is an upcoming German television series scheduled to be released in the second half of 2018 on the TV channel Sky.[1][2] The eight 1-hour episode World War II series is a remake of the 1981 World War II submarine warfare movie Das Boot.

Plot

As the former work's plot ends in December 1941, the setting is the year 1942. The storyline is split into two narratives, one based on land, the other set around the submarine. The focus will be on both a German U-boat crew and the French resistance trying to disrupt their activities. The series focus on the narratives of the upcoming Resistance in La Rochelle and the claustrophobic life aboard U-612.[3][4]

Cast

Production

In June 2015, it was announced that the 1981 World War II submarine warfare film Das Boot would be made into a remake.[8][9] In July 2016, it was announced that the 1981 World War II submarine warfare film Das Boot will be adapted into an 8-part television series, directed by Andreas Prochaska.[10][11]

As of September 2017, the series was in production and is planned to premiere at the end of 2018 on multiple European channels of Sky plc.[12] It is being produced by Bavaria Fiction, Sky Deutschland and Sonar Entertainment.[13].

Like the 1981 movie, the 2018 series is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 book Das Boot, but with additions from Buchheim's 1995 follow up sequel Die Festung.[5][2]

The submarine used in filming is the non-diving replica built in Malta as the 'modified' S-33 for the film U-571, also shot in Malta. Footage, sets and models from the movie have been reused for other productions, including 'Submerged,' depicting the loss of USS Sailfish, and the fictional Ghostboat.[14] The replica is still afloat, moored in Marsa in the inner part of the Grand Harbour. A special rig was built for the production by a Maltese armory team, that allowed the submarine's anti-air gun fire and recoil, something not done before with a blank firing gun.

Germany (Munich), France (La Rochelle), Czech Republic (Prague) and Malta were chosen for the on location shooting, which started on 31 August 2017 and finished after 105 days on 20 February 2018.[5][2][1][15] The budget was 32.8 Million dollars.[16]

Broadcast

The series first episode will be broadcast on 23 Nov, 2018.[17]
