Daniel Alan Stein is an attorney, immigration advocate, and the president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Stein has appeared on virtually every significant TV and radio news/talk program in America and has been cited in the media as "America's best known immigration reformer." [1] Stein has also testified more than 50 times before Congress on behalf on FAIR.[2] Stein’s employer, The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), is a non-partisan, public interest organization of concerned Americans, united in the belief that immigration policies and laws should again serve the nation’s current and future needs. FAIR advocates for better border management, lower levels of overall immigration, and a greater focus on highly skilled immigrants.[3]

Before FAIR

Dan Stein was born in 1955 and is a native of Washington D.C. He received his undergrad from the University of Indiana and attended the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America where he received his J.D.[4] Before working in immigration law, Stein worked in private practice in real estate, federal agency litigation, criminal law, and tax exempt corporate law.[2] Mr. Stein's interest in immigration began as a professional staff member of the U. S. House of Representatives' Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control, where he studied U.S./Mexico border issues and international crop substitution efforts. Stein also served as the Executive Director at The Immigration Reform Law Institute, a public interest litigation group that has represented a variety of organizations in immigration and administrative law matters.[5]

Work at FAIR

Dan Stein joined the Federation for American Immigration reform in 1982 as FAIR’s Press Secretary. Stein became the executive director of FAIR in 1988, then took over as president in 2003. FAIR grew immensely under Steins leadership, with the organization currently bolstering over 2 million members nationwide.[6] While at FAIR, Stein has published hundreds of articles on immigration policy, and through the years has appeared on national television thousands of times on just about every significant news program in America, has spoken to major groups across America, and has been asked to testify before Congress on immigration related issues over 50 times. FAIR is classified as an extremist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.[7] FAIR leaders, including Dan Stein, have ties to white supremacist groups and eugenicists and have made many racist statements. Its advertisements have been rejected because of racist content. FAIR’s founder, John Tanton, has expressed his wish that America remain a majority-white population: a goal to be achieved, presumably, by limiting the number of nonwhites who enter the country. “I blame ninety-eight percent of responsibility for this country’s immigration crisis on Ted Kennedy and his political allies, who decided some time back in 1958, earlier perhaps, that immigration was a great way to retaliate against Anglo-Saxon dominance and hubris, and the immigration laws from the 1920s were just this symbol of that, and it’s a form of revengism, or revenge, that these forces continue to push the immigration policy that they know full well are [sic] creating chaos and will continue to create chaos down the line.” — FAIR President Dan Stein, "Oral History of the Federation for American Immigration Reform," interview of Dan Stein by John Tanton, August 1994. [2]

Immigration Advocacy

Dan Stein had built a reputation as one of the leading figures in the immigration debate, advocating for immigration reform that serves national interests.[8] Stein advocates for preventing illegal immigration by increasing border security, increasing funding for ICE, implementing an employer e-verify system, eliminating the job magnet that incentivizes illegal immigrants to come to America, and preventing illegal immigrants from receiving welfare benefits.[9][10] Stein also advocates for a reduction of legal immigration to a sustainable amount of 300,000 immigrants per year.[11]

Other Notable Achievements

In addition to FAIR, Dan Stein is a member on the Citizens' Debate Commission, a nonpartisan American organization, formed in 2004, that was established to sponsor future general election presidential debates.[12]
