Stark Group (formerly DT Group) is the largest retailer and distributor of building materials in the Nordic countries. The 180-store[2] Søborg, Denmark-based company had been owned by Wolseley plc under its Ferguson[3] subsidiary. It was bought by Lone Star Funds in November 2017.[4]

The Stark Group owns the chains Stark in Denmark, Beijer Byggmaterial in Sweden, Neumann Bygg in Norway, and Stark in Finland.[1]

History

Stark Group was founded as Aarhus Trælasthandel in 1896. In 1918, the name of the company was changed to Det Danske Trælastkompagni and in 1996 it was changed to Danske Trælast.[5]

In 2003, Danske Trælast was acquired by CVC Capital Partners for DKK 6.3 billion.[6] In 2006, CVC Capital sold the newly-named DT Group[6] to Wolseley plc for 14.6 billion.[7]

In March 2017 Wolseley announced their intention to sell the company.[8] In July 2017, Stark sold its Denmark-based Silvan chain of stores to Aurelius Equity Group.[9] In November 2017, Stark Group was sold to the private equity firm Lone Star Funds for €1.025 billion.[4]

Employment

As of 2017, Stark employed 2192 people at its 72 stores in Denmark, 826 at 27 stores in Finland, 1297 at 66 stores in Sweden, and 270 people at its 15 stores in Norway.[1]

In December 2017, the Danish press reported that Stark (then DT Group) was Denmark's third-largest employer through a state-sponsored corporate trainee program for the unemployed (virksomhedspraktik) in the third quarter of 2016. The program is dominated by supermarkets, and has been suspected of being used to subsidize cheap labor; DT/Stark was the only non-supermarket in the top ten companies using the program.[10]
