Overview
The Cumberland School (TCS) was founded in 1989 as Cumberland Christian Academy. It is a private, non-denominational, K3-12th grade Christian school in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. Grades K3-12 are accredited by ACSI, the Association of Christian Schools International and by SACS, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, now AdvancED. In addition, TCS is "Accredited with Quality" by the Georgia Accrediting Commission for grades K–12. In August 2018, Cumberland will open its new upper school campus for grades 8-12 at 4967 Brownsville Road, Powder Springs, GA 30127.
Founding headmaster Dr. Larry Kendrick is the father of Christian filmmakers and authors Alex and Stephen Kendrick. Dr. Kendrick retired after over twenty years of service and was succeeded in 2010 by Dr. Lee Campbell who currently serves as chief of administration, innovation, and research. In 2017, Dr. Byron Greene[1] was recruited as executive director in order to aid in strategic planning and development.
TCS offers a college prep curriculum and provides hands on support to students with college and scholarship planning. The guidance team works one on one with seniors to help them apply for colleges and scholarships. SAT preparation is included in tuition. Standardized test scores are consistently above average across all grade levels. College acceptance for seniors was 100% for the past six years; in 2017 alone, TCS students were offered almost $1 million in scholarships. Recent acceptances have included the U.S. Naval Academy, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Georgia, U.S. Military Academy West Point, and many other state and private universities.
Student life
Outdoor activities, retreats, educational trips, and mission trips are an integral part of the educational experience at Cumberland. Students can participate in contemporary worship, instrumental ensembles, photography, filmmaking, music theory, yearbook, and art, as well as take private lessons in voice, piano, drama, and dance. Clubs include Patriot Ambassadors, Civil Air Patrol, BETA Club, International Club, and Patriot Voices.
The high school now offers several "major explorations" through iExplore, which began in the 2016-2017 school year.
Multiple summer camps are available each year.[2]
Athletics
Cumberland is a member of the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association[3]. The Cumberland School's athletic program has a long history of successful competition and league championships.[4] Sports offered in 2017-2018 include cross country, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading (including competition), baseball, golf, softball, track, soccer, and tennis.
Cumberland strives to train athletes to honor God with their talents. Coaches not only help with technique but are available to help students in their spiritual life as well 2018 Boys GICAA Division II-AA Basketball State Champions.[5]
Counseling
The Cumberland School strives for 100% college acceptance and is active in helping students sign up for testing, preparing for testing, applying to colleges, and finding scholarships. The goal is to help students find what God has called them to do, and to be well prepared for future studies. [6]
