Hidden (Welsh: Craith) is an eight-part Welsh television drama serial, created by Mark Andrew and Ed Talfan. It was initially broadcast on the Welsh-language channel S4C in January 2018 under its Welsh name, with the English-language sections dubbed into Welsh. The original bilingual version of the series was broadcast on BBC One Wales and BBC Four in June and July 2018.
Overview
The series stars Sian Reese-Williams as DI Cadi John, an experienced investigator whose love of policing stems from her father, Huw, a long-serving officer with the North Wales Police. Cadi and her partner, DS Owen Vaughan (Sion Alun Davies) are called to investigate when the body of a young woman who disappeared six years earlier is found in a stream. The investigation leads to the reopening of a cold case and identifies a possible miscarriage of justice.
Leading actress Sian Reese-Williams commented that the series was more of a "personal drama" than a crime series, because of the multiple human stories involved, including those of the victims, the families of the victims, and the criminal protagonist.[1]

Filming and release
Filming took place in 2017 in Bangor and Snowdonia[2]. The series was the second project on which Andrew and Talfan collaborated, following Hinterland. It was first broadcast as Craith, in Welsh, on S4C on 7 January 2018 and aired weekly.[3] A bi-lingual version of the series aired, mainly in English, on BBC One Wales and BBC Four in June 2018 under the title of Hidden.[4][5][6]

| When the body of a young woman is dredged from a lake deep in the mountains of Snowdonia, DI Cadi John and DS Owen Vaughan are assigned to the case. They identify the victim as Mali Pryce, who disappeared five years earlier, when she was 16. Injuries on Mali's body suggest she had been running for some considerable time before meeting her fate. Cadi begins to explore the theory that Mali was held against her will during the five years that she was missing. Cadi's father is becoming unwell. Local labourer Dylan Harris faces hostile treatment from his mother Iona. The district nurse Lowri is seen to have a stormy relationship with her ex-boyfriend. Megan, a new student at Bangor University, is seen leaving a busy house party and walking to the Menai Suspension Bridge. | |||||

| Cadi and Owen discover a possible link between Mali's disappearance and the disappearance of Llinos Evans, a girl who disappeared from foster care in 2007 at age 15. Meanwhile, Dylan spots carer Lowri in a gas station. He develops an unhealthy interest in her and unsuccessfully attempts to abduct her as she visits her mother's house. | |||||

| Lowri's boyfriend is questioned by Cadi and Owen, but they have no evidence to link him to the attack. They track down the vehicle involved, but find it is listed as belonging to a "William Parry", who died some years previously. Student Megan has a breakdown after losing her coursework. Fleeing from university, she tries to take her own life and inadvertently falls into the hands of Dylan, who is actively searching for another victim. | |||||

| Dylan takes Megan prisoner and locks her in the cellar of a derelict house on his farm. He disposes of his truck by hiding it under covers, and starts using an old van. Dylan's mother Iona, who treats both Dylan and his daughter Nia with contempt, is angry and refers to Megan as a "whore". Police officers Mari and Ryan take part in a house-to-house enquiry, and Mari becomes suspicious of Dylan but does not follow through. | |||||

| Cadi and Owen investigate a link between the case and the death of schoolgirl Anna Williams, who was found dead two days after she disappeared in 2005. Although her uncle, Endaf Elwy, was convicted of the crime, Cadi becomes doubtful and seeks permission to interview him. A visit to the owner of the reclamation works where Elwy was working at the time of the murder fails to turn up any leads. To add to the complications, Cadi finds that her ex-detective father was involved in the original investigation. | |||||

| Cadi explores the possibility that the wrong man was convicted of Anna Williams's murder, but an interview with Elwy results in his panicking and obtains no useful information. Megan's best friend reports her missing, and Cadi realises she may be dealing with another abduction victim. Megan tries unsuccessfully to get Nia to help her escape from the cellar. Reception
The Guardian compared Hidden favourably to the Swedish Scandi-noir drama The Bridge, describing it as one of the "current powerhouse run of Wales-set dramas", with "scenes in Welsh to provide that sweet Nordic subtitles hit".[7] It went on to say "Hidden is perhaps the most confidently stylish and stylised yet. As well as a gorgeously gothic credits sequence, it features handsomely brooding landscapes, offbeat interior locations that go far beyond the usual bland corridors/offices of cop drama, and an ominous, skin-prickling soundtrack skilfully employed to heighten the sense of dread."[7]
