Starting in 1963, then known as Openlands Project, Openlands is a non-profit that works with groups and individuals in northeastern Illinois to preserve open space, develop walking and biking trails, restore natural areas, and connect people to the outdoors. It is a member of Chicago Wilderness.[1]

In 1978 the Corporation for Open Lands (CorLands) was started as an affiliate of Openlands. In 1982 the Canal Corridor Association was formed by Openlands to create the first National Heritage Corridor along the old Illinois and Michigan Canal.[2] The Openlands Lakeshore Preserve in Fort Sheridan was created in 2011, encompassing ravines and bluffs along the shore of Lake Michigan.[3] In 2012 the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was officially started with a 12-acre donation from Openlands.[4]

In 2017 Conserve Lake County (serving Lake County, IL) merged with Openlands.[5]
