Concord, Sunderland

Concord is a village in Washington, a town in Tyne and Wear, England. Historically part of County Durham, it joined a new county in 1974 with the creation of Tyne and Wear. Washington is located geographically at an equal distance from the centres of Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland, hence it has close ties to all three cities.

The main street at Concord's centre is "Front Street", which comprises several takeaways, pubs, frozen food shops, newsagents and a large amount of betting shops such as PaddyPower, Cashino and Betfred. Notable shops in Concord include a relatively small Heron Foods supermarket, a Pharmacy, Greggs, and a few Co-Op stores situated around the area.

Concord, despite its small population and size, has a reasonable number of easy connections to nearby towns and cities.

To get to Newcastle, you can board the "Fab Fifty Six" bus, normally a double decker, which also continues to Sunderland if going eastbound, while heading to Newcastle if going westbound.

To get to Chester-le-Street and Durham, the "Whey Aye Five-0" Route 50 runs from South Shields, via Boldon, Concord, Washington Galleries, Lambton, Chester-le-Street, then through smaller areas like the Arnison centre and Framwellgate Moor. Limited services run only to Chester-le-Street. This service runs every 30 minutes for most of the week.

To get to Houghton-le-Spring, the Route 4 "Connections4" runs from Heworth to Houghton, via Follingsby, Concord, Washington and Fatfield. This service is very frequent and normally runs every 10 minutes.

Neighbouring villages include Albany, Donwell, Usworth, Sulgrave and Follingsby. Nearby industrial estates include Stephenson, Hertburn and the Nissan Factory. Washington School is also nearby, just north of the Sunderland Highway.

There are 7 bus stops in Concord. Six of which are in the designated bus station area, while the other bus stop is on the opposite side of the main street. Concord has the Washington Millennium Centre, situated in The Oval, which provides clubs for both children and young people, as well as having an outdoor football area and other regular activities.

The village also has a small health centre, the Victoria health centre. Coordinates: 54°54′52″N 1°31′23″W / 54.914383°N 1.523136°W / 54.914383; -1.523136
