The "Pueblo ejemplar" prize of the Premios Princesa de Asturias is awarded to those "Asturian villages or societies which have taken care of their history, customs or environment" The Prize was created in 1990 and in 2015 the winner was Colombres.

Colombres is in Asturias (Ribadedeva). Bordered to the north by the Cantabrian Sea; west of Cantabria, and the Deva River; on the south by the parish of San Juan and west by the parish of Noriega. In 2011 its population was 1,385 inhabitants living in 915 houses.

One of the most famous people in Colombres was Iñigo Noriega, who was born in Colombres on 21 May 1853. He emigrated to Mexico with his uncle. There, he earned a lot of money and he sent some to Colombres. The public library in Colombres is named after him. He built a palace in his village too, as he wanted to come back. This palace, named “ La Quinta de Guadalupe” is the setting for the “Fundación de Archivos de Indianos”, a place for documents about people who emigrated. It contains many documents about people who emigrated to South and North America since the 19th century. The documents are about those people's feelings when they left Asturias or other parts in Spain, how they arrived in America, what they did there and so on.
