Clanio

The Clanio (ancient Greek: Γλανις or Κλανις; Latin: Clanis, Clanius, Glanius or Lanius) is a river on the Campanian plain. The Greek origins of its name are linked to the abundance of violets on its banks, as cited in Giulianus Maius's treatise De priscorum proprietate verborum V. Clanius: Clanius fluvius Campaniae prope Acerras a χλανις idest viola, qua ejus ripae abundant. Its flooding was a frequent problem, with invocations made to Caesarius of Africa in attempts to avert it. The Regi Lagni were built to attempt to solve the problem and were named after the river.
