Chernoochene municipality within Kardzhali Province

Chernoochene Municipality is a municipality in Kardzhali Province, Bulgaria. The administrative centre is the village of Chernoochene.

According to the 2011 census, the municipality of Chernoochene has the highest relative share of ethnic Bulgarian Turks (97.1%), as well as Muslims (96.6%) of the total country. Chernoochene is a predominantly rural municipality, with all of its inhabitants living in one of the fifty villages. Its population is currently 8,901 (31.12.2016), with 21% over the age of 65 while only 13% is younger than 15. The population is declining rapidly.

Chernoochene has a total fertility rate of 1.56 children per woman, slightly higher than the national average of 1.54 children per woman. There were 74 births recorded in 2016, down from 115 in 2000. Many young people, especially woman, emigrate from the rural villages to urban areas and abroad.
