Chazhoor (Chazhur) (Malayalam : ചാഴൂര്‍) is a village in Thrissur Taluk of Thrissur district in the state of Kerala, India.[1] Chazhoor is a region with Hindu majority(50)closely followes by Muslims(42) with tiny amount of catholics(8).Thriprayar(4 km),Thrissur(22 km),Chavakkad(17 km) etc. are nearby cities. Chazhoor is 4 km away from Snehatheeram beach.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Chazhoor had a population of 6541 with 3022 males and 3519 females.[1]

Civic administration

For administrative purposes, the Chazhoor panchayat is divided into 18 wards, from which the members of the panchayat are elected for five years.

History

Chazhoor village holds the ancient palace of Chazhoor (Chazhur) kovilakom. This is the root (moola thavazhi)of the Cochin royal family, in Ernakulam district (Perumpadapu Swaroopam).

The Naalukettu (Kerala style of joint family house) of Chazhoor royal family is in this village.

Chazhur Pazhayannur Bhagavathy temple is in this village, famous as an important Deity of Perumpadappu Swaroopam. This village is beautiful with a lot of Paddy fields and water bodies. As a remote village, development was slow in this area.Main income for the people was agriculture and toddy tapping. Few of the leading farmer families were Chetthikkattil, Purathattil and Thachandra .

Some of the earlier famous Government employees were Dr.Gangadharan (Kerala Health Services ) and T.R.Gangadharan ( Defense Ministry ). Besides this, there were some school teachers, who were employed in the Government high school Peringottukara and LP school, Alapad. Latter on in Government service and Public Limited Companies, some highly qualified locals could reach the top positions. Dr.Abdul Azeez (Urologist) and Shyam T.G (Management Expert),Adv. T.R.Rameshkumar(Chaiman MPI) ,were some prominent personalities among them. There are some persons who are post graduates from world famous institutes like NID. Chazhoor panchayat is part of Thrissur Parliament constituency and Nattika Legislative constituency. The current MP is C N Jayadevan and MLA is Geetha Gopi.
