CDRD is Canada’s national life sciences venture, powering the country’s life sciences industry by creating and growing companies of scale – while training the scientific and business talent needed to drive them to become leading global anchors for Canada. They do this by building collaborations with partners from academia, industry, patient foundations, the investment community, and other Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), and providing the specialized expertise and infrastructure to identify, validate and advance promising discoveries, and transform them into commercially viable investment opportunities for the private sector — and ultimately into new therapies for patients.

Facilities and expertise

Scientific infrastructure consists of 40,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and expertise, through six scientific divisions that mirror the drug-development process — Target Validation, Screening, Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Delivery, Pharmacology/Toxicology and Biologics.

Commercial expertise and support includes: business case analysis/development, market assessments/forecasts, investment and partnering strategy, leverage & support, intellectual property (IP) positioning, protection & management, communications.

Funding

CDRD is supported by both public and private sector organizations looking to advance the successful commercialization of health research. These organizations include:

  • The Canada Foundation for Innovation
  • The Government of Canada's Networks of Centres of Excellence Program (which recognizes and supports CDRD as a Centre of Excellence in Commercialization in Research (CECR))
  • The Province of British Columbia
  • Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research
  • Western Economic Diversification Canada
  • Canadian Institute for Health Research
  • Genome British Columbia
  • Pfizer Inc.
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)
  • Merck Canada
  • AstraZeneca Canada

Participating institutions

CDRD currently has an existing portfolio of 285 supported research projects generated from its network of 100+ affiliated research institutions. These institutions represent Canada's top health research universities and research centres, as well as select international partner organizations. Collectively, these affiliated institutions invest several billion dollars in health-related research every year, and CDRD plays a pivotal role in translating that research into commercial products and economic returns including new jobs for British Columbia and Canada.
