Catarina Martins

Catarina Soares Martins (born 7 September 1973) is a Portuguese politician and a tourist sector businesswoman. She has been chairman of the Bloco de Esquerda party (Left Bloc) since 2012.

Career

After earning a PhD in Languages and Modern Literatures from Open University (Lisbon) and a master's degree from University of Porto, she dedicated to theater. She is the co-founder of an avant-garde project entitled Companhia de Teatro de Visões Úteis (Useful Visions Theater Company), which emerged in Porto in 1994.

She was elected to parliament as the first Left Bloc representative of Porto in 2009. On 11 November 2012, Catarina Martins and João Semedo were elected co-chairmen of the Left Bloc, successors to Francisco Louçã. Semedo quit his function on 30 November 2013. Martins would become the party "coordinator" ever since.
