CNW Group (CNW) is now Cision in Canada, a public relations and earned media software company and services provider. The former CNW (Canada Newswire) commercial press release service continues on as part of Cison's global distribution network.

History

CNW was founded in 1960 as Canada News Wire, by Joseph Adair Porter Clark (1921-2013) who became CEO and President of the news service.[1] (Clark is the father of television journalist Tom Clark)

CNW's purpose was to deliver original text news releases to news media outlets on behalf of paying clients. This model expanded over time to include provision of ancillary services required by Investor Relations and Public Relations professionals, including translation, photography, webcasts, media database and media monitoring.

Canada Newswire distribution uses XHTML technology which enables simultaneous transmission of text and images to receiving outlets. In 2003, CNW became the only provider endorsed by TSX for the calibre of its newswire and webcast services.

CNW was acquired by US-based PR Newswire in 2013.[2] PR Newswire (and CNW) were subsequently acquired by Cision in 2016.[3]

Cision distribution via Canada Newswire is offered stand-alone or as part of its flagship Cision Communications Cloud platform for PR professionals.

Cision (CNW) acquired CEDROM-Sni in 2017.
