The Caetano Alpha was a design of coach bodywork built by Salvador Caetano of Portugal between 1976 and 1983.

History

Released in late 1976, the Caetano Alpha consisted of two versions for the standard sized coach, one with a more conservative design, with, for instance, rounded window corners and bodypainted window pillars, and another with design motifs new to the Portuguese coachbuilding scene, such as windows with square corners and thin window pillars covered by black frames, version known as Alpha 77, in order to distinguish.

The styling introduced by 77 version got its approval and got facelifted in late 1978 with a totally renewed windshield and front topping, as well as the back section. Following the Model Year-like convention, it would be labelled as Alpha 79.

The model would receive another two facelifts, by the end of 1979, Alpha 80 and by 1981, Alpha 81.

The coach was also imported into the UK, from 1978, initially by Moseley of Loughborough and was badged as "Moseley Continental", as happened with its predecessor, the Estoril.

In Portugal, this was a widely popular coach, being a very representative model on Rodoviária Nacional fleet (from version 79 and on), becoming a symbol of their express services in the whole decade of the 80's, as well as on most private touring operators. Also in Portugal, most of the coaches were equipped with Magirus-Deutz chassis and mechanics.

A minibus version based on 77 design and never facelifed was named Alphete.
