CW Chu College (敬文書院) is one of the new colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong admitting its first students in 2012.
Origin
Founded in 2007, CW Chu College is named after Dr Chu Ching-wen (1906–1996), a prominent industrialist and philanthropist who spent the larger part of his career in Hong Kong. The university decided to perpetuate the memory of Dr Chu by naming a new college after him.
Student life
CW Chu College is a small college with a student membership of approximately 300. It is one of the three colleges at CUHK to provide residential accommodation for all its undergraduate members for four years of their studies.
To enhance the interaction among student and with teachers, students join communal dinners three times per week. They benefit from the wisdom and experience of speakers from all walks of life during the college high table dinners.
General Education Programme
The General Education Programme at CW Chu College consists of
- a credit-bearing component (an induction course for Year 1 students and a capstone course for Year 4 students)
- a non-formal component that carries no credit units (required extended orientation for freshmen and communal dining including high table dinners; and voluntary social service)
The induction course is a key component of the first-year experience introducing students to university learning, while the capstone course will allow students to synthesize their academic skills beyond the limits of the major programme, engage with a real-life issue of relevance to society, analyze the factors, constraints and options, and present their findings in a cogent, reasoned and persuasive manner.
Students are expected to learn and participate actively through lectures, tutorials, presentations, group work and the writing of term papers.
Focus
To prepare for new students, CW Chu College started the planning and development of its mentorship scheme, service-learning programmes and many cultural and social activities. It is exploring exchange opportunities with universities abroad, with the aim of enriching students’ cultural awareness and helping them to develop cultural sensitivity as well as a global outlook.
Campus location and amenities
The campus is at the Campus Circuit North.
Apart from living quarters for undergraduates, the buildings house dining facilities for the entire membership of the college and purpose-built spaces for tutorials, seminars, and other collegiate activities.
Admission
The application process consists of two steps:[1]
- Apply for admission to The Chinese University of Hong Kong and declare the academic programmes of your choice. Go to the website of the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid (OAFA) to see the procedure.
- If you are given an offer of admission to CUHK (in some cases a conditional offer), OAFA will ask you to list your priorities among the nine colleges. CW Chu College will then make a selection among those who have placed it among the first few choices, usually after an interview.
Endowment funds for scholarships and bursaries have been set up to recognize excellence and provide support.
Master
Professor Kenneth Young, Professor of Physics at CUHK, is the master of CW Chu College.
