Britt's
Britt's Department Store was an American department store chain that existed between 1962 and 1982. It was an upscale version and division of the J.J. Newberry variety store.[1]
History
Britt's was founded in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s.
It was acquired by the J.J. Newberry chain in December 1928 and all Britts stores were rebranded as J.J. Newberry locations.
The Britts name was revived by J.J. Newberry in the early 1960s as a discount store chain.
During the civil rights Birmingham campaign, civil rights activists organized sit-ins at the segregated lunch counters in Britt's Department Stores, which led to the arrest of 20 protesters.[2]
