Series Seven of Britain's Got Talent, a British talent competition series, began broadcasting in the UK during 2013, from 13 April to 8 June on ITV; because of England's international friendly with the Republic of Ireland that year, the show took a break on 29 May to avoid clashing with live coverage of the match. Filming of the Judges' auditions was pushed back, so as to not conflict with the filming schedule that year of Stephen Mulhern, host of Britain's Got More Talent,[1] while Simon Cowell was unable to attend a day of auditions due to illness. Other than these events, no changes, permanent or temporary, were made to the hosts and the judges for this series.[2][3][4] However, the cash prize was reduced to £250,000, following the last series. The series is mainly notable for being the first one to be won by a foreign act, and for an incident that occurred during a performance by a finalist, in which an individual stormed the stage and pelted Cowell with eggs.[5]
The seventh series was won by shadow theatre troupe Attraction, with comedian Jack Carroll finishing in second place and opera duo Richard & Adam in third place. During its broadcast, the series averaged around 10.4 million viewers.
Series overview
Following open auditions, the Judges' auditions were held in January and February 2013, within Cardiff, London, Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham; although filming of these had been planned for 7 January,[6] it was pushed back to 16 January in order to avoid clashing with Stephen Mulhern's filming schedule for Catchphrase that month.[1] Most of the auditions were uneventful; although Cowell was forced to miss most of the auditions on the second day in Manchester due to illness, no guest judge was brought in to replace him.[7]
Of the participants that took part, only forty five made it past this stage and into the five live semi-finals, with nine appearing in each one, and eleven of these acts making it into the live final; the wildcard act chosen by the judges was ventriloquist Steve Hewlett, after he lost out in the Judges' vote in the fifth semi-final.[8] The following below lists the results of each participant's overall performance in this series:
- Winner | Runner-up | Third place
- Finalist | Semi-finalist (lost judges' vote) | Semi-finalist (eliminated)

Criticism & incidents
Lack of variety
Towards the end of the series, several viewers made complaints that the seventh series had lacked variety amongst the acts it showed, citing that the majority of the finalists being mainly singers was evidence of this. In response to these complaints, Amanda Holden took to giving a statement that defended the show's selection of performers, stating that decisions made on the finalists had been mainly left "to the public". As part of the evidence used in her argument, she pointed out that singer Jordan O'Keefe had been voted into the final by the public, and that viewers could not criticise the "public's decision" on their choice.[32]
Unsuitable & questionable auditions criticism
The seventh series received several complaints over unsuitable content being broadcast on the programme from the audition episodes, the most serious of these aimed at Britain's Got More Talent against footage shown on the programme of the audition by burlesque dancer Scarlet Cuffs. Her audition involved stripping down to the song "The Bare Necessities", which was later criticised for being unsuitable and for being aired before the 9pm watershed. In its defence, ITV had made certain that the footage had been edited to make it acceptable, including censoring some of its content, but these were found to be insufficient during an investigation conducted by Ofcom, which ruled that the programme had breached broadcasting codes in regards to protecting young children from unsuitable material. Ofcom's director of content standard, Tony Close, later released a statement that made clear about the regulator's commitment to ensuring British broadcasters adhered to these codes:[33][34]
"There is a clear line in terms of what it is acceptable to broadcast before the 9pm watershed. A striptease act broadcast at times when a significant number of children were likely to be watching clearly crossed this line. The protection of children from potentially harmful content is a key area of concern for Ofcom, reflected in our ongoing work on the enforcement of the 9pm watershed."
Two other auditions also received complaints of featuring unsuitable content for broadcast:
- The audition of Keri Graham received similar complaints over her performance featuring her stripping down to her underwear and performing a provocative dance on stage. In their defence, the show's producer made it clear that the footage was not aired until it had been edited carefully to ensure it was acceptable, as part of its efforts to stick to Ofcom's guidelines on suitable dance routines; it had been informed of these changes made by the regulator in 2011, prior to filming for the series being started.[35][36]
- The audition of 71-year-old Kelly Fox received several complaints over the use of extremely explicit lyrics that she had sung as part of her performance. One such complaint came from a member of the National Association of Head Teachers, who claimed in their opinion that no parent with "an ounce of morality" would allow children to hear someone sing such words on a family show, and chastised the show's producers for airing the content before the 9pm watershed. Fox refuted such criticism.[37]
Alongside complaints of unsuitable auditions, the seventh series also generated complaints from viewers over the auditions by two child participants - Arisxandra Libantino, and Asanda - in regards to both conducting performances that were considered inappropriate for their age. In both cases of criticism, the complaints were over the song's that they performed - Libantino's performance involved singing Jennifer Hudson's "One Night Only",[38] while Asanda's invlved the singing of Rihanna's "Diamonds" and performing provocative dancing.[39] The director of Mediawatch UK, Vivienne Pattison, criticised the show for "sexualising children" based on these auditions.[36]
Cowell's "egg attack" in final
During the live final for the seventh series, viewers found themselves watching the performance of Welsh singers Richard & Adam being overshadowed towards its climax, by an egg attack conducted against Simon Cowell by violinist Natalie Holt.[40] The attack was designed as part of a protest aimed against Cowell's influence on the music industry, and also against miming on live television shows.[41] Security were forced to promptly remove her from the studio, having been taken off-guard when she stormed the stage, with the hosts later having to announce to viewers that the attack had not been part of the Welsh duo's performance. While Holt's actions had done little to disrupt the performance, both Cowell and a member of the audience behind him were hit by an egg each, and were forced to leave the studio to clean up and change clothes during a commercial break.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched to uncover how the attack managed to happen. It was eventually revealed that Holt had breached security at the studio through securing a position as one of the backing musicians for the performance, in which no checks were made to any of her possessions, meaning that she was able to smuggle the eggs she had brought with her on to the stage. Holt's motivations for the attack were found to have been fuelled by the failure of her classical band RaVen Quartet securing a place in the previous series during the auditions stage of the competition. Although Holt stated her motivations later on social media, these came after she gave an apology for her "silly" actions occurring during Richard & Adam's performance.[40]
