Bos acutifrons is the most ancient representative of the genus Bos. Fossils of Bos acutifrons are found in middle Pleistocene-aged strata of India. It is widely accepted that from this species all later species arose. Between 1.5 and 2 million years ago the aurochs probably descended from this species.
