Blue Mountains panther
The Blue Mountains panther is the name given to the exotic big cat that has been reported by residents of the Blue Mountains area, west of Sydney, New South Wales, for over a century. There is no proof that this animal exists.[1] During the time that the Zoo was open it was prone to runaway animals with both lions and bears escaping. In 1995 several lionesses escaped the park and killed a dog. The animals were recaptured and the Lioness responsible for the killing was shot. A bear also escaped and was killed by residents of the nearby Silverdale. Due to the escapees the park was forced once again to upgrade.

The Lioness escaped on the 10 of August 1995. It came through a stormwater drain that joined the Safari Park to a popular teen hangout. A few months before two 12 year old boys were playing outside the park. Bored and looking for something to do they crawled into the stormwater drain. At the other end of the drain there was a rusted metal grate. After about thirty kicks the grate gave through and they boys crawled into the park. After hanging out for a bit, fishing for yabbies, and generally exploring the pre-teens crawled back to suburbia. In under a month the lionesses escaped through the now open drain and onto the adjoining street. At the time Staffiord Bullen told reporters that the lions “would have to escape from their night houses and go through two fences”.
