Bernard Derriman

Bernard Derriman is an Animation Director born and raised in Australia.

He began his career in animation at Walt Disney Studios in Sydney. He was an animator there until 2006, working on both television series and films.

Derriman was also a highly talented rugby player winning several premierships with Old Ignatians Rugby Club in Sydney. A versatile player often moving between the playmaker role and centers where he was considered quite a devastating impact runner. Rumours of his hogging were greatly exaggerated. Despite a promising rugby career he decided to leave the game behind, moving to Los Angeles in 2010 to follow his creative side. Despite the move he remains an avid rugby fan and supporter of the Australian Rugby team who is often asked for his opinion on the state of the game.

He also ran a highly successful 'speak-easy' bar known as the Bougainvillea. Between 1998-2003 the bar won multiple awards and hit local notoriety for its famous guests such as all-time Wallaby great, David Campese. It was a favored bar by many "scaly wags" and characters who knew how to have a good time.

Derriman has since created a lot of his own animated short films. His first success was when he received the Best Comedy Award at the 2001 Tropfest Short Film Festival, in front of an audience of 100,000 people with his animated short "Chopper". The short was based on the feature film Chopper, about real-life criminal Mark Brandon Read.

Derriman went on to co-create the animated series "Arj and Poopy", with US comedian Arj Barker. Their "Arj and Poopy" shorts have received worldwide recognition, most notably winning the internet category at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2005 and 2006. The most recent installment, "Congo Windfall" was chosen in the Top Ten Best Animated Flash films by the website Cold Hard Flash. It also featured the new character to the series, Bouncy the Dog, voiced by Johnny Brennan of the Jerky Boys fame.

He directed and animated a music video for the song "Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me" by the band TISM. Some of his commercial work includes the bovine character for Unistraw's worldwide Sipahh Milk Flavouring Straws brand.

He was animation director on the PBS children's series "Big Green Rabbit" and in 2009 won three Heartland Regional Emmys for his work on that show. He was animation director on the Australian network show Kenny's World featuring Shane Jacobson, the spin-off television series of the film Kenny. He worked as a storyboard artist on the TBS series Neighbors from Hell and the Fox series Bob's Burgers. In 2010 Derriman won a competition for the 50th anniversary of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival with his short film "Pop". Derriman is now directing on the second season of Bob's Burgers.

Derriman is now heading up production of a full feature film for Bob's Burgers which is due to be released in 2019. Bob's Burgers has also been signed for another two seasons due to its popularity and unique burger fans.
