Bellhops Moving

Bellhops (previously Campus Bellhops) is an American moving company founded in 2011,[1] by Cam Doody and Stephen Vlahos, and now operates in multiple cities across the United States. The company developed the first tech-enabled moving platform—for the purpose of streamlining the booking process and assuring the quality of move-day services. The Bellhops headquarters is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee’s Innovation District.

History

Bellhops, originally named Campus Bellhops, was founded by Cam Doody and Stephen Vlahos in the summer of 2011 to provide college students a way to move into and out of their dorms [2]. The concept sprang from a weekend they spent brainstorming business ideas at a cabin in Childersburg, Alabama.

Doody and Vlahos invested in a website and aimed to schedule 30 to 40 moves during Auburn University’s three-day freshman orientation weekend. Ultimately, they managed to execute 325 moves.

The following January, they hired eight people to work as Campus Directors and recruit teams of student movers at large colleges throughout the Southeast. They also expanded their services to include off-campus apartments and homes.

In 2013, the founders connected with the Lamp Post Group, a venture-capital firm based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and, after receiving seed capital, rebranded their company to Bellhops.

In 2017, Bellhops appointed Luke Marklin its CEO. Previously, he was a general manager at Uber, overseeing its business operations in several markets throughout the Southeast.

Origin of the name

The name Bellhops was an extension of the founders’ original business concept, in which they offered curbside assistance to students moving into dorms. For this reason not only is the company called Bellhops but it is also the term used when referring its movers. In the beginning, the company had a strict policy that required all applicants to have a registered and working “.edu” e-mail address, thereby ensuring their status as college students. In 2017, however, this policy was updated to include individuals over the age of 18 who, following a background check and a series of interviews.
